I'm doing the Jeep steering shaft conversion in my 81 Elco. Since I'm changing the column to an aftermarket tilt unit, what length steering column should I order?

I would call the company that makes the steering column and ask them. Take a look at their website and see if they give information on how to measure for a new column.

Why not just find an OEM tilt column? It will be alot cheaper than going with an aftermarket column like Flaming River, etc.
Plus no muss or fuss about proper length, etc.

Whatever floats your boat..

Has not 1 person on here swapped out the column for an aftermarket unit and know the proper length?

I think the dood with the thread "sand bagger" did a swap somewhere in his build, you might want to check out his thread and see if he knows

Just a thought. Couldn't you just measure a stock column and use the dimensions to match up to an aftermarket unit..or am I coming in at left field?

If you really feel the need to run an aftermarket column why don't you step up to an aftermarket steering shaft with actual universal joints on each end, at least that way overall length is not as critical because you cut the shaft to fit the column after it is installed,
I have a Borgenson collapsable shaft on mine with their u-joints on each end but I am using a stock 88' Monte SS column in my 83.
