What are some tips you guys have for getting the most HP from a stock 307? I've already cleaned out the cat w/ straight pipe, advanced the timing, and am running a K&N filter. Thanks.

even if ya rebuild the engine you will never get more than about 350 horse out of it. my buddy rebuilt his 1895 442 307 to the nines.........and they tweaked that sucker as much as they could. dyno'd at 330 horse.

still a vast improvement........but not up to the 400 to 500 horse guys are kickin out now

peace

Why won't they make HP? It seems with new heads, intake, and cam on a good rebuild with a tune it should be able to make more? I mean 289 and 302 fords can make some good numbers, 327's can make good numbers. So why is it that the 307 (and even the 305 chevy) you usually never see making good numbers (meaning like 350hp or more)?

Not sure about the 307, But SummitRacing.com sells a supercharger kit for the 305. After a rebuild and a good cleaning, That's what I was going to get, Along with some good pistons, A cam, And some good heads.

All of those engines have completely different designs, Olds being the worst for making power. They can make power, but it will take a lot of money.

I say this....get a old carberated chevy 350. 4 bolt main of coarse. then have the shortblock done...bigger cam and have the heads done too. then throw in some goodie like edlebrock carb, headers, bigger oil pan, intake and youll be easy 350 or more. combine that with new true duals, cats and i bet youll be even closer to 400hp than you think! Im doin that on my 86 cutty. got the 307 running good now but the 350s goin in by spring.

Its a lot easier to put an Olds 350 in a car that came with an Olds engine. You have to change over a bunch of stuff to correctly put a Chevy engine in.

I understand the best route to go is a 350 swap, and that IS the eventual plan. However I am on an extremely limited budget right now, I just looking to get what I can out of it now with cheap improvements. I'd be happy with around 200hp, I'm putting 3.42:1 gears in it next. Eventual plans are for a built Rocket 350 backed up to a TH350 transmission.
