I have an 83 olds/hurst which i am swapping the 307 to a 455. The 455 came from a 1970 olds delta 88 and slipped right in and bolted to the mounts and 700r4 transmission with no problems. The problem is the 307 carb, distributor and transmission are electronic and the 455 is not. This motor has been in the car for 5 weeks and 3 garages who supposedly know what they're doing all have no clue. I would love to find someone who has done this or knows how to do it and point me in the right direction. I've been told i have to change the distributor to an hgi ( i think that's right) and also i need to buy a kit to change the transmission. I also was told i need to find a bracket for the kickdown switch on the transmission to fit the carb. I would appreciate any help i can get on this as i am dying to drive this baby with some real horsepower instead of the dog that's been it the 6 years I've owned it. The 455 has a 2 barrel carb and i was told by the guy i bought it from to leave it that way and i'll gtte all the power i need. Any help? Thanks

Just my opinion but I would change the carb to a 4 barrell and a dual plane intake for the lower torque of the 455. You will need the bracket for the 700 r4 and depending on what year it is you will probably need a torque converter lock up switch. These cars did not come with a 700 r4 so there is no torque converter lock up switch. I would also change out the distributor to either an hei or an msd unit and get rid of the stock computer setup. It sounds like your trying to get the 307 computer to control the 455. I don't think you can do this with the stock 455 2 barrell carb, the computer for the 307 controls the timing in the distributor ( I'm pretty sure this is correct ) and you will need the 307 carb and dist to do this with but again your putting it in a 455, yes it will bolt up but there will be some differences in getting it to actually run.

First, there is no 700R4 trans made that bolts to an Olds motor without an adapter kit. If you have the stock trans in that 83, it's a 200-4R. Be sure to keep a dustpan and brush in the trunk to sweep up the broken trans pieces if that trans is still stock. There is no "kickdown switch" on either a 200-4R or a 700R4, so I don't know what switch you think you need a bracket for. These transmissions use a throttle valve cable, which does much more than just the kickdown function, so it must be connected and properly adjusted for the trans to work. You will also need some sort of converter lockup control to replace the function provided by the stock ECU, which won't work once you change the carb and distributor from what was on the 307. Whoever told you to keep the 2bbl is an idiot. Note that Olds used a 4bbl on every performance version of this motor in the 60s and 70s.

It really sounds like this swap is over your head OP. Sorry I dont mean to be a dick but it does...

O and stop listening to the idiots that can seem to fix it.

You need a standalone distributor, a 4 barrel non feedback carb, and an aftermarket TC lockup kit.
