t-tops

The only option is swapping the entire roof from another G-body. Definitely not worth the money - and if you do go ahead with it, you are bound to have problems. This isn't a simple project. You are better off looking for a factory T-top car, and cross your fingers that it isn't rotted out.

I would caution against any aftermarket t-tops (or even sunroofs) as weatherstripping will be impossible to find. Factory parts will usually have an aftermarket for the weather stripping. For this same reason, I would never buy a G-body (or anything else) with non-standard T-tops (ie. Hurst Hatch etc.). Factory T-tops were done by C&C.

Look at this, Brand new Hurst Hatch Kit & Installation Manual!

Take a look at the glass. That's either a '70-'81 F-body kit or a pre-'78 A Body kit.

It's NOT a '78-'86 A/G Body Kit. At least I've *never* seen one that looked like that. I don't know if that manual he's got listed came with the klt or not.

Has anyone ever seen one of our cars with tops like this? Maybe I'm wrong and have just never seen one.

[EDIT: Heh! Oh wait, that's you! 😀 Are you positive that kit is '78-'86? And is that manual part of the kit or an addon?]

OK, I'm convinced that kit is pre '78

Apologies to whomever's car that is, but those tops just look like the '77 and before kit. Wouldn't want anyone to drop the coin on these, get them home and realize they're SOL.

Just noticed that.... don't want to pick nits, but the factory tops were done by Hurst, at least that I'm aware of. The C&C tops were aftermarket. (believe me! Mine are C&C!) Parts (like weatherstrips etc.) for the factory tops are still readily available, although through the aftermarket now. The factory tops extend all the way to the forward roofline, where the C&C tops left about 3-4" of metal along the windshield, inside the factory tops had the plastic trim around everything, where the C&C did not. Search for my post and in my photo gallery where I replaced my headliner and had to cut it in around the C&C tops.... 😀 I've only ever seen one other C&C top car 'in the wild' and it was in a yard (of course I got what I could 😀 )

I see there is some doubt about the Hurst Hatch posted and the years it fits. That Kit fits the 78 and up for sure. I know because I was an authorized Hurst Hatch installer back in the 70's. Hurst produced these kits and some were used in very early production 78 vehicles, Fisher Body produced their own design that could be done in the assembly line instead of shipping completed vehicles to Brighton, Mi for installation of the T-Tops. Since they were made by the same people in the same time period they would look about the same. The beam has a different shape for sure, as well as the beam is slotted for the adjustable drip edge that the 77 and earlier did not have. The center brace kit was needed for the 78 and up because it did not have the double roof like the 77 and earlier models. I also have the installation manual for the pre 78 "A" body as well as the "F" body. I will take picture of introduction page of manual which states vehicle application and the passing of F.M.V.S.S. Roof Crush Resistance Certification Tests and post this evening. I guarentee that the Hurst Hatch Kit fits the years described.

Hm, OK now I'm interested. 😀

Didn't mean to jump on anybody's case, just I've never ever seen a '78 up car with this style roof in it. The glass just looks way too much like the '77-type. I was also to understand that GM did ship the cars off to have the tops put in. I guess now that you mention it, the factory t-top bags are emblazoned with the big Fisher Body carriage logo.... Hrm.

Cool stuff, if that's all true than that's a nearly one of a kind kit. Learn something every day I guess! Being a former installer was that part of your old stock, or where in the heck did you come across it if not?! 😀

It was part of my old stock, I actually had intentions of installing it in a "Toy" for myself, but along came one daughter then another, then needed a bigger house.... then college for the kids... so here I am, still have lots of projects, caregiver for my Mother (91) and fell that it is time for someone who loves these cars, that can use it, get it and enjoy it before it ends up prt of my estate where it may never be appreciated, because if Im gone no-one whould know what the heck it is.
