I have a1986 Monte SC with a4.3 in it. Ever since I got the car it has taken a while to start. Turn the key and it takes at least five to eight secs for it to start. I have replaced the spark plugs added accel wires 8mm new cap and rotor too. Had the timing checked and fixed but it was only off a tad bit. Either way none of that has fixed it, now if I tap the gas as I turn the key it start a lil quIcker. Has anyone had this issue before?

Also its got a new battery, connections, positive write, and starter

I would do the filters. Well specifically the fuel filter.

Have changed the fuel filter on the frame rail. Car runs fine when I get it started just wondering why it takes so long to start.

Well go rent a fuel pressure tester kit, and see if you have the right pressure. Then go from there.

Is it fuel injected? If so, does the fuel pump run when you first turn the key on? If not, check the fuel pump relay. A bad relay would cause a slow start (long crank time) because the pump won't run until the engine builds oil pressure if the relay is bad.

If it is carb'd check your carb choke settings, and make sure that your setting your choke prior to starting, usually just press down slowly once on the pedal and let off, then crank engine, should fire up if set correctly.

 An '86 4.3L is most likely the throttle body injected engine

Definitely sounds like a fuel delivery issue. I would remove the throttle body and clean it very good. Inspect the injectors on the thottle body. Check/replace vacuum hoses

Does it ever run irratically under normal operating :?:

If fuel injected, turn key on and listen for the fuel pump. It should run for a few seconds, then shut off after operating pressure is reached. If it doesn't look to the relay, as suggested already. A pressure tester port should be near the throttle body, and if you have pressure, then I'd look elsewhere like at the ignition.
