Alright so i recently acquired 50+ records from my grandparents. I want to convert these to my computer. Just wondering what exactly i need to buy to do this. Do i need a turntable that will somehow hook to my laptop? I have no clue. And if you do find something can i get it at Best Buy? Thank's to giftcards from christmas i am limited to where i can go. Thanks guys!

I was at Best Buy the other day and saw a deal that recorded records over to cds. Not sure what it cost or exact details, but it might hook up to a computer. I did'nt know they had such a thing! I even laughed about it!

i am going to try to go tomorrow or wednesday to see what i can find

You would need something that can convert analog to digital. If your desktop PC has a sound card with RCA Line Level inputs (not outputs!), you could use that along with a good quality turntable you could find at a thrift store or on EBay. That, or a mic jack which is very common.

It's amazing to think just how many people now live among us who have never seen a vinyl record or a cassette tape. I know that I don't really own any of them or the ability to play them back. Everything I own is on CD or in MP3 format on my laptop so I can use it with my iPods.

RCA line inputs... i have a laptop....would i have these? i have a turntable that i can play them on now

No, laptops typically don't have them. You may be able to use a microphone input though, and get a conversion cable and run it to the phonograph. Are these particularly good records that you like, or are you just trying to solve a technical puzzle? Getting a good digital copy off an analog source without a substantial remastering will be difficult due to the tendency of analog mediums to have background noise and degradation over time. I have never done any of this, so to me this is just another theoretical puzzle to solve. Please keep that in mind while reading my posts. Also, using the mic input may limit you to a monaural recording. You may be able to get some sort of cable to run line level inputs to a USB port, but I have no idea how to make the computer read the analog data. It could also fry the laptop as the higher voltages that the turntable may give out could exceed the laptop's technical limits.

they do make a record player that plugs into the compuiter and converts the info for a CD. another way is to get a TV tuner, this way you'll have the inputs and the digital conversion.
