I am in the process of sanding my car for paint, and while doing so, I've sanded a couple (more like a lot) spots to bare metal accidentally. Today on one of those spots, I saw some red rust forming, and freaked. I went and painted motor oil overtop of the bare metal spots, which probably did more harm than good, because if that oil gets into bondo, it will more than likely ruin it, right? I dont have access to any bodyshop grade primers, and I wont be able to get the car painted for a few more months, so is there anything i can put on top of the metal that is better than oil that will keep it from rusting? Any suggestions appriciated.

Go to Auto Zone and get a spray can of self etching primer for the bare spots.
Just make sure you clean that oil off with some lacquer thinner or something similar.

do you think the oil will ruin the bondo that it got onto? thats my main concern.

Probably. Bondo is very porous. Sorry man, you may have a real mess on your hands now.

Spraymax areosol epoxy primer, just search online for the best price.

Zinc rich spray. Had the same thing happen when i was painting. You'll have to sand away bondo and redo where you got oil.

If you don't have access to automotive grade primer,or a spray gun stop doing bodywork. You said the car won't be painted for a few months anyway, just stop. You're going to cost yourself more money than you save by sanding areas and leaving bare metal exposed, and then pouring motor oil on it. Even spray paint primer won't do you much good,as water and humidity will cause rust to start underneath. Go buy a $10 spray gun from Harbor Freight Tools, and go buy a paint store and pick up some self-etching epoxy primer if you're intent on sanding to bare metal. If you do it all wrong, any shop will charge you to strip it all off and redo everything you've done. The prep of a car body is 90% of the final paint job. You screw it up,and your new paint will look like *ss.

X2. I agree. You can actually get good quality primer in a spray can. I've used spray can primer with no ill affects. All bare metal spots must be sprayed with self etching primer before any k2 (filler primer is used) Back in high school I was in auto body , we actually used spray can etching primer quite often, especially if it was just a few smaller spots. Usually just one light coat of etching primer is good, it's not for fill in. It simply promotes paint adhesion to bare metal. You're certainly gonna have to get that body filler out, the oil has soaked thru & paint will never stick in those areas. Clean all the areas with mineral spirits or surface cleaner before you had anymore primer, etc.

As I said before, they sell real 2K epoxy primer is spray cans now, you hit a button on the bottom to mix the two parts inside the can. Only downside to them is most stores don't carry them, and that they are only good for 3 days after being activied. As Cutty said, stop sanding until you have your paint supplies.
