The "I'm Obsessive With Lawn Tractors" Thread

Day off of work today, had decent weather out. My goal for today was to clean up the wiring on the mower and make it organized. Call it OCD, I do the same with my cars.

Got into this mess..

So this is the before clusterfck..

Now the after cleaned up

Now it's tucked and I can change the oil without making too much mess

Next is beautification, brush some rust off and throw some paint on it. 3 out of 4 tires are dry rotted one loses air slowly so that is next to replace. I have a bagger kit that is extra, when I got these mowers the guy had one on each of them. The kit is damn near new so I'll sell that to get money for tires, or trade it for some.

Got into the painting today, weather was perfect.

Took a drill with a wire wheel and scrubbed the surfaces, blew it all off with air and smothered with Krylon Corrosion Preventitive. When I get new tires I'll clean up the wheels.

Not too shabby.. 🙂

The back page article in this Months Hot Rod Mag is a Murray tractor. The present owner decided that too much was just right and swapped a LS 5.3 into it. The mill is backed by a 350 and the owner admits it "can be a handful". No comments or time slips for how fast he can the yard or lawn.

Got into mine today with an attempt to change the tires out. That didn't happen so I'll have to figure out who does it around here. If I'd known that now I would have just bought already assembled.

EDIT: Google found this:

Yup I'll buy.

Brushed down and painted the back plate, the deck in the spots I could reach better with the rear wheels off, and the bagger kit that I'm keeping. Seat pad was all kinds of messed up now I know why the cover was on it, hit it with some duckholstery to keep it in place.

Pulled all 4 wheels & tires off.
Like a 3rd Gen Camaro in a trailer park, it's on blocks..

I just found another Cub Cadet about to be scrapped. CC124 with creeper gear, Sims enclosure, electric winch (rough), AG bar tires, and attachments (QA mower/mule-drive and snow blower). Negatives: carb broken off at base, no battery, cast-iron front end broken in half, battery wires and a couple other wires cut-off, and fuel tank filled with rust/crud.

PS I bought this beast and did some disassembly on site yesterday. I am planning to go back up in the next couple of days and do the following: i.) install new carb, ii.) adjust governor and review linkage between carb and governor; iii.) install new choke cable; iv.) fabricate and install new battery tray/hold-down; v.) install full size automotive battery; vi.) soak fuel tank to loosen up crud (at home); vii.) insert fuel tank after soaking into lathe jig with a couple thousand BBs inside and then tumble peen interior of fuel tank (at home); and viii) place new-to-me cast iron front end into electrolysis tank(at home);

Since this is a performance forum, here's my action shot of boring out the venturi on my K301 carb on the cadet. Hoping for a little more air flow.

So, on that cast iron front I-beam, y'all going to try and weld it back together or go digging for a replacement?

I found a new-to-me front axle in rough but cheap condition. Both spindles in the new-to-me front axle are stuck in solid. Likely a heat and beat to remove spindles. Then 24 hours in electrolysis tank and then cleaning, painting and new zerks.

PS I was prepared to seldom the old axle back together but this used, but rough, one seems a better bet.
