BUILD THREAD “The Juggernaut”

Been making very good progress on the car this weekend. I have the passenger’s side rear floor piece almost ready to weld in.

I got the center bridge section fully welded in and metal finished out, it looks good but more importantly has added the much needed strength back to between the front and rear halves. No more flexi-flyer here now.

Yesterday I spent some time laying out the bead roll lines to add strength to the floor pan, something I foolishly failed to do last time.
From concept…

Have to thank my better half for operating the wheel on the bead roller for me, while she controlled the feed rate I was able to concentrate on the start/stop points and following the lines.

Next up was to make and weld some attachment tabs on the car wall side, clean things up, and put the sanded finish on it.

Then it was time to shift the focus slightly, removed the side panel to access what was left of the old rear floor.

That’s it, all that was remaining, which wasn’t much anymore. All of that is now gone, today’s itinerary is to prep the welding surfaces and punch spot welding holes in the tabs, then start burning it in permanently. The side panel has already been trimmed down to the proper dimension and test fit together, so things should go pretty smoothly. Also hoping to get a good start on making the new driver’s side pan and bead rolling it today too.

One last look:

The Juggernaut taking after her namesake now. Hard to stop or even slow the progress once it gets rollin’!!

Passenger’s side rear pan is 95% welded in and finished out, and the driver’s side has been created, bead rolled and formed to shape.

I have maybe another half night to finish off the passenger’s side and temporarily reinstall the firewall side panel, then it’ll be onto trimming and fitting the driver’s side pan and getting it welded in.

I’m digging how it’s looking and coming together!

Are you going to cover the rear seat area and firewall? It would be a shame to hide all that great metal work!

Yes and no Tony.
While it might still change, at this point I’m envisioning the rear firewall wrapped in black leather and the floor carpeted with sound deadening underneath. I definitely want to keep the rear firewall very visible as it’s a focal point inside the car, and I want the F-85 emblem inspired design to be prominent as an obvious nod to the Cutlass heritage.

Leather work... cannot wait to see this 😍 All of the work you do just fascinates me.

Received the Astro Van steering shaft I purchased from ostrich last week today. It was already cleaned up and painted, and exceptionally well packaged. Very impressed and strongly recommend to say the least.

Olds Cool already has the Jeep shaft upgrade, but the Jeep shafts are getting harder to come by in these parts nowadays. This Astro shaft is destined to find its new home on The Juggernaut when I install the bumpsteer correction center link and ProForged LBJ’s on it.

Replaced the 11 lb spool of welding wire last week, today I’m off to get more shielding gas.

This car is literally held together with MiG wire and dreams.
