Jeez, don’t check the forum for a day and look what happens! All these comments and responses!

As a child I only dreamed of owning a custom classic like "The Juggernaut". Im a 36 year old union electrician and the itch to start a project like yours has only increased over time. Im in the market for a 86 cutlass salon with t-tops. I stumbled up on this thread a few hours ago and have been glued to your work. I have not felt this inspired and motivated in years. Thank you for sharing your passion. I joined gbodyforum just for your threads. I'll be studying and shimming in on your work as i'll be starting mine just as soon as i find the perfect starter (hopefuly in the next month or so).

Wow. I’m incredibly humbled and flattered at your comments, thank you!
It’s a truly remarkable feeling knowing that you’re the source of someone’s inspiration and motivation. Thank you for passing that on to me and the rest of us here, like I said I’m extremely flattered. I’m also beyond words that you felt strongly enough about my threads to join us here on GBF. Glad to have you aboard.

Be sure to keep us all apprised of your search for your Salon, as well as your progress when the time comes. It’s a great crew we’ve got here, don’t hesitate to post and ask questions, we’d all be happy to help.
:)

And thank you again, you really made my day with your comments.

If you like The Juggernaut which is over the top cool, check out his other build thread here....

This one is a more "mundane" version. Same year, same model, more of a sleeper if you will.

Thanks for the promotion Scott, but “mundane”?

Hmmphh!!

Lol, just kidding buddy. I knew what ya meant!
;)

Donovan does some top notch work! You'll find yourself surfing through thread often to catch everything.

Hey Jim, nice to hear from you again. Thanks very much for the props man, that’s quite the compliment coming from you and being familiar with your work. Appreciate it sir!

He's the man!

Hehehehe
Thanks Eric!

D,
We've almost forgotten about the poor ol' 'naut. The focus lately was more on the Oldskool project....which I've enjoyed as well.

Say it ain’t so Jack! That was one of my fears, that The ‘Naut would get forgotten in the time it’s gonna take me to get Olds Cool back up to snuff.
:(

Oh well, it is what it is unfortunately at this point. Olds Cool is the closest to being a fully functioning, running and driving car at this point in time, so it’s gotta remain the focus until it’s done. That, and I’ve gotta get it finished so I can get some much needed garage real estate back again! I’m quickly running outta room with 2 partially disassembled cars in the shop!

I’m aiming and busting *ss (as much as non-car related life will allow) for a completion date of springtime to get the car in paint. Not sure if it’ll happen, but that’s the goal.
Wish me luck!

Progress on The Juggernaut will definitely resume again after Olds Cool is back together, I’m chomping at the bit to get back to her again. Please be patient everyone, it WILL happen!

Alright alright D, Olds Cool is more like the subtle, honor roll student compared to the badass kid that always gets in trouble which is The 'Naut. :)

Actually, if I had to compare it in terms like that, I’d consider Olds Cool to be that kid that everybody THINKS is a straight “A” student, but really smokes dope with all the bad boys behind the school, whereas The Juggernaut is that muscle bound tattooed guy that everybody just steers clear of... don’t have to poke a sleeping bear with a sharp stick to know what the outcome will be!!
Lol
It was the word “mundane” that got me. To a car guy that’s the equivalent of a smack across frozen knuckles with a 9/16”!

I would’ve accepted “mainstream”, “conventional” or any of a couple other descriptors... but “mundane”?? Ouch!

But like I said, it’s all good man. I knew what ya meant!

I was thinking that the Juggernaut is the straight A student. You know, the one's who go above and beyond, getting a 4.3GPA or something. Of course it can also run track, is the starting quarterback, and one of the strongest players on the basketball and baseball team. Basically it can do whatever the hell it wants. Lol

Olds Cool is like the average guy who does good in school. He's not a star but far from a loser. He's the cool guy you can drink a beer with. He's not an over achiever but he's no slacker either.

That's my "take" on it. Of course I'm in the garage right now, it's like 16°F outside, my heat is barely keeping up and I'm drinking 90 proof whiskey to stay warm. Lol. What the hell do I know? Lol

So as most of you guys know, The ‘ol Juggernaut is in limbo for the time being, but I never stop planning and scheming on it.
Several months ago I picked up a set of great condition euro style mirrors used on the later Monte SS’s, El Camino’s and Camaros from O.D. Showtime. (Thanks Kevin!)

The thought process behind doing this was to explore the possibility of adding outside mirrors back to the car after shaving off the ugly old ones and welding up the holes.
I’m still not 100% sure or convinced if I’m going to use them just yet, but I knew that at some point I’d at least be able to test fit them on Olds Cool first to get an idea of how they’d look. I am just so in love with the clean sleek lines with no mirrors on the doors, but I do realize the practicality (and necessity) of having them.

So here we are.

Last week I brought one up from storage in the basement and mocked up the driver’s side real quick. I’ve had a chance to get used to seeing it on there for a bit now, and I’m actually a bit surprised that I don’t totally hate it.

There’s an interference issue with the wide belt mouldings (that I have on both cars), but I’m convinced that I’ve already formulated a plan to contend with this. It would involve a trip to see my buddy that runs his own CNC shop, and having him make me some billet adapters/risers the same shape as the pedestals that I can then paint body color. They would likely be near invisible when installed. I should even be able to use the factory gaskets to the doors that way.

Here’s a couple pics of the mirror mocked up on Olds Cool with no gasket:

And a couple more mocked up with the gasket and showing a closer view of the interference with the belt moulding:

I’m glad I did this as I found a couple little things I’ll do differently if I decide to use them. In my opinion, they sit too far back to be used mounted in the factory location. I really think it would look a lot better if it was moved ahead several inches to sit more in the “triangle” area of the “A” pillar and top of the door. This is also where they sit on Camaros. That way the angles of the mirrors won’t look as out of place and clash with the lines on the car. Second is the height issue, which I’ve already touched on.

Other than that, I think if there was ever a set of factory mirrors that ever suited a car like The Juggernaut well, these would be them. However like I said earlier, I’m still not 100% on them yet.
What do you all think? Convince or dissuade me one way or the other...

Two more pics for reference (sorry, I don’t have any of the driver’s side of The ‘Naut on my phone):

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and opinions on this.
Thanks guys.

My first thought was that they stick out like a sore thumb but I think it's because of the color difference....definitely need moving forward like you are thinking and up just enough to clearance the top edge of the door. Just my .02
