Saw the trucks here spreading in the afternoon yesterday for the heavy rain storm today, and its supposed to stay above freezing even at night for a week. So whatever deicer they lay down is just going to be washed away today which begs the question why? Its wasting salt and fuel for the trucks as well as creating more undue damage to cars, infrastructure, and the environment. We are having a record mild Jan with only rain so far this month. Guess they want all the fresh water to turn brackish lol.

To give them a benefit of the doubt, if the atmospherics were right it could fall as rain (or wet snow) but if the air temp was cold enough not much higher in the air than the ground level then who knows what could happen for freezing rain.

As for the weather itself, our "weather forecaster called for a low of 37 on Monday. Guess what happened while one of the mustangs was outside:



We're not even supposed to have this let alone at the temps they 'forecast'.... so, you have to ask, which side of optics do you go on. Excess salt once in a while when unneeded, or, a policy of not spreading unless it's imminent and absolute and you've got skating rinks out there a couple times?

Today my state's DOT was salting roads, for a rain storm with temps to remain above freezing. Guess Murphy really wants NJ to be the saltiest and rustiest state. We have not had any snowfall so far this winter and I guess the DOT salt crews probably have a quota to meet regardless of frozen precip.

Ever since he screwed up a few years ago, he’s been brining like crazy. It took me 4 hours to get from Montclair to Lincoln park in that storm. That’s like a 20 minute trip normally.
Also, I was on the roads all day today, and they were fine. Have to head down near Philly tomorrow, hopefully it will be more of the same.

With this being my 4th winter plowing I've got the chance to see them here misjudge on when & how many trucks to send out. Been out when it wasn't needed, sat at home waiting for a call while it piles up. I've been out to pretreat with no guaranteed snow fall, sent home while the fight was still on. Sometimes it's the ol' gotta spend it/use it to ensure you can still get the same amount or more the next year. We have also had issues they misjudged how much salt & anti-skid stone to have them about shart themselves trying to get enough to each shed to treat all the roads.

I was about to suggest the same thing. Personally I think it's a big source of government waste. "Use it or lose it" with regards to budget just causes departments to spend to the max, or exceed, their budgets every year. There's virtually no upside to gov employees for being underbudget.

Around here, as a taxpayer, it frustrates the hell out of me to see plows ripping down my street when there's virtually no accumulation. And that seems to happen rather frequently.

Black ice is nasty stuff, but it requires freezing temps to form. Supposed to be 39 degrees when the rain starts and rises into the 50's over night when the rain ends so no danger of ice. Rusty brake lines are not safe either. Salt doesn't eliminate the danger, only delays it and if misused can increase danger.

We have had 3 different cars where the brake lines have rotted out. The road crews up here put that brine sh*t (worse than straight salt) down at the slightest hint of snow.

Governors determine whether roads get salted?

People will complain they are treated too much and too little. Lesson I learned early on in the public sector, whatever you do it's wrong.

We have had 3 different cars where the brake lines have rotted out. The road crews up here put that brine sh*t (worse than straight salt) down at the slightest hint of snow.

Had that happen twice on my old Ranger plus the trans cooler lines. The salt finally done the Ranger by eating the rear chassis.
