Timing curve

For Olds the Best HEI comBo of cam/weights/springs to install is one that yields 16 degrees of mechanical at 3k... Usually I like to set the base timing at 20 degrees and I think that a total of 36 degrees works out great for a street car utilizing pump gas...

Not that i don't believe you, but can anybody else back that up? Sounds familiar. My engine acts like it wants more timing, i've got initial timing set at 18 degrees right now, i might steup up to 20 and see how it works out.

As far as weights go i think i'm good, but if i keep having problems here i'll find a place to buy a GOOD set of factory replacement weights. I found another problem i didn't even suspect, the el-cheapo coil i was using was causing problems, i picked up a petronix flamethrower 2 coil and the car holds a better idle / noticeably more throttle response.

I found 36 total to work best at the track with my low compression 350 and 403. Olds do like much more initial timing than a sbc. What is your compression ratio? You may also need a stop for the weights as extra timing is added at higher rpm.

I believe my total right now is 38, 18 initial and 20 from my advance. my C/R should sit at the high 9's, possibly 10:1.

Yeah, the factory coils suck. Most of the aftermarket coils are better. I run a Accel super coil. With your total a 38 sounds about right. Most importantly is how does it feel at that setting?.

The coil i had was by either proform, procomp, pro something, it cost between 15-25$, a factory would have been better than this i think haha.

The car feels great, runs like a champ no missfire/hesitation/bog/ easy starts. Carb STILL leaks gas, haven't nailed that problem yet.

Now that i've any/all unseen issues out of the way i might try playing with the light spring set again, while using the light spring set i noticed a few things, 1st even with a 2.41 rear gear the car won't hesitate to roll tire from a dead stop, no power braking. With the light springs it also runs hotter. The engine would also have tougher starts but that's most likely related to the carb leaking.

That's great! Your carb probably needs a rebuild. Is it leaking from the primary butterfly axle? Most rebuild kits have a bushing to fix that.

It's already been rebuilt, i got the carb from ken and Everydayperformance. It's actually leaking from the air horn, me and ken narrowed it down to either float/needle seat. I just don't have any extra air horn gaskets on hand so i haven't tackled the problem yet.

That coil really surprised me, i wouldn't have guessed that to be part of my problem. The coil was only in use for a few hours or so collectively.

Oh ok. That could be the float. Since it been rebuilt, you should be ok with the Airhorn gasket coming off with out tearing. As far as the coil goes, was it ever dropped? Coils are VERY sensitive to damage from blows.
