Timing

With #1 plug removed, stick a small screwdriver in the hole. Rotate the engine by hand (not with the starter) until you can feel the piston top with the screwdriver. It may be helpful to have help for this. Rotate the engine until you feel the piston come all the way up and stop momentarily before it starts to go back down. That momentary stop is TDC. For this exercise TDC is TDC. It doesn't matter whether you are on compression or exhaust stroke. As for where the timing mark SHOULD line up to? Depends on which balancer you have. Either about 1 o'clock or about 2 o'clock. If the balancer and the timing cover are a true match the balancer mark SHOULD line up with 0 on the pointer. If they are mis-matched -- all bets are off.

Thanks for all the help guys, MUCH appreciated! And I've deff got a miss-matched timing tab/ balancer, When i turn the distributer to make the mark match up anywhere on the tab the motor runs like pure hell, and BARLEY idles.

I decided to just do the timing by ear, and she runs beautifully! Nothing wrong with going by ear, right?

I solved most of my throttle response problem, i had to re calibrate the float bowls in my new carb (It's not brand new, used).

Not really, did you have it near zero to begin with? If that's a yes, then you'll be alright

just make sure to test drive it HARD. if the timing is too advanced you'll notice it when you go to WOT. then i'd recommend seeing where the timing does show up. then just write it down so you know in the future.
