Timing

I just set mine at 0 then bump it up a little.

It's easier to do it by ear as pontiacgp said, you don't really need exact numbers unless you're building a high dollar race car.

I'll try that, because early detonation is what i think is going on. Even when its not in drive, if i Stomp on the gas it'll sit there and Knock/ choke untill i let off the gas, like its trying to flood out. And when its in drive if i put my foot down alittle to hard it'll choke out and stall.

I'll keep that in mind, I've got a 65k super coil (HEI), So i might do mine 5 over as well and see how that works. Does anybody know off the top of there head what the gap for a chevy 350 should be on plugs?

Ok, so i think the timing tab on my engine is wrong.

With the Vac advance disconnected the Mark on the harmonic balancer sits a good 3-4 inchs before the timing tab, is this right?? Now whats confusing is the engine runs good like this....I honestly can't say what RPM its running at but i know its idling nice and low like it should be, i'd estimate somewhere between 500-900 RPM's at idle.

Sounds like you have a mis-matched balancer/pointer. There are different types. One is viewed from above looking down through the water pump. TDC is about 1 o'clock. The other type is viewed from the driver's side and TDC is about 2 o'clock. If you are lucky and have the "2 o'clock" balancer you can add an inexpensive bolt-on pointer and go from there. Be aware that there are different pointers for 6.75", 7", and 8" balancers. If you have the "1 o'clock" balancer and the 2 o'clock pointer you can pull the #1 plug and find TDC. Then mark the balancer to correspond with the pioiter. I like to use white-out because it shows up easily under a timing light. Hope this helps.
