You can super glue it and get by in South Carolina. It just has to be "securely fastened" in an upright position and not swinging in the wind. So if it's not moving or flapping with zip ties, you're within the confines of the law. You can even have a small sticker on the tag as long as you're not covering up numbers. Nothing covering the plate in a manner that prevents validating the plate.

A portion of SC Code 56-3-240.
'Every license plate, at all times, must be fastened securely in a horizontal and upright position to the vehicle for which it was issued so as to prevent the plate from swinging."

"No other license plate, lighting equipment, except as permitted in Section 56-5-4530, tag, sign, monogram, tinted cover, or inscription of metal or other material may be displayed above, or upon the plate other than that which is authorized and issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles for the purpose of validating the plate. It is not unlawful to place a decal or a frame on the license plate if it does not obscure any letters or numbers [this doesn't mean useless slogan letters]. A motor vehicle owner may attach a trailer hitch to a motor vehicle provided the hitch does not obscure more than two inches of the license plate issued to the motor vehicle. It is unlawful to operate or drive a motor vehicle with the license plate missing and a person who is convicted for violating this section must be punished as provided by Section 56-3-2520."

Every state has its different laws.

If the law states the plate must be secured with screws then that's the law.

Do laws contradict each other sometimes, absolutely they do

Will that contradiction get you off the hook.........nope not likely.

Ignorance is not an excuse

The argument of the screw head which is required by law to secure the plate to the vehicle blocks a portion of the plate is a jailhouse lawyer tactic that will just annoy the arbitrator or judge

But you may get a couple of HELL YA's and MMMM HMMMM's from the other victims of the system.

But you can lawyer-ize this crap all day. Just get your plate, stick it on your car where you're supposed to, abide by the law, and you should have no problems. But make sure you're in compliance with local laws and be able to prove it.

Let me start by saying I appreciate what the police do. Growing up in the inner city I definitely see there plight. Id never be a cop its a thankless job. On the other hand ive ran into som pretty heartless pricks. Last july my moms dog needed put down he had cancer. She also had stage4 cancer. The only car I could get Peyton in was my monte since it was so low and i could yank the front seat out. So after leaving the vet(first i had holley seat sink issues it took 30 mins and a jump to start it) im going home i see a cop on the opposite side of the road. He seen me busted uturn and lit me up. I pull over he tells me turn my car off. I tell him about the heat sink issue and i cant shut it off or it wont start. He dgaf. So i shut it down. He then starts telling me my mom in the backseat didnt have her belt on ( she was loving on her dog leaning forward) again he dgaf. Hes trying to give her a ticket. I ask him if he can let it slide shes broke paying 1k a month for insurance to stay alive. Nope he stand over my bald crying cancer stricken mom and her dead dog and says " No I cant. You should have been wearing your safety belt". Walks back and prints the ticket. As he is handing mom the ticket Im trying to the start car to no avail. Again he gives no f####. He walked back to his car (that was still running) to leave me to start the car. I had to wait 5 mins but the car gods looked out and it fired up. Its little crap like this that makes normal non gangbangers dislike the cops. I understand we were "breaking the law" but damn have a heart.

Any excuse.

That being said, in Ontario it is prohibited to affix a dealer plate to a vehicle, so they are stuffed like little black bags with "clear" (usually dirty or yellowed) plastic windows on them - and flop around all over the place. How is this not in contravention of the visual obstruction law?

It is all very subjective.

That was the main point of the over-arching story of the guy that got a plate ticket. There either had to be some other instance of dickery going on by the driver, OR some major dickery by the officer. I get that everyone can have a bad day, but there are instances where people not of this land are killing residents and not even facing justice, while at the same time you have these stick up the butt folks for whatever reason bleeding people's wallets for easy pickings like a dealer plate frame. I'm for following the law, but not to pick and choose who you apply it to and when. Laws aren't supposed to be applied subjectively, although everyone should be on board with the fact that humans are involved, so that goes out the window. The judicial system gets to decide when there's disagreement on subjectivity.

I don't care if there was dickery going on by the driver cause he was not charged with dickery or anything else by the cop. Cops are not supposed to abuse their power to get even. The tow truck company I represent sent me over two ticket yesterday, one for the driver and one for the company. The cops are upset that I have gotten over 200 tickets for this tow truck company dismissed so they go out of their way. It was over an annual sicker so the cop removed the license plates as well.

the cop is incorrect with giving two tickets as the law reads "No person shall operate or permit to be operated" The law refers to a singular person so they can charge the driver with operate or the company with permit, not both and I'll let you know if I win that argument.

the cop removed the plates but not the sticker and the law reads if you remove one you have to remove the other, you cannot remove the plate alone. "Where, as required by subsection (1), the sticker or stickers or other type of proof of inspection are not displayed as prescribed by the regulations, a police officer or officer appointed for the purposes of carrying out the provisions of this Act may seize the sticker or stickers or other type of proof of inspection and the number plates of the vehicle. 2015, c. 14, s. 27 "
