Even though you need to do some homework and some hands-on work the 8.8 route can be a cheaper alternative than the 8.5 10-bolt as stated above. People think these are sacred rear-ends to the G-body but many don't realize X-Body... The one thing I don't like about them is they also use C-clips.
There is a basic write-up in the April 2015 Car Craft in the Junkyard Builder section on swapping an 8.8 into a G-Body. It's really a gloss-over BUT it does have a table of the 8.8 applications: years, widths, brakes, bolt patterns. Hit up FFM -Fast Fords & Mustangs - tons of articles on the solid axle 8.8 as well as the independent versions.
