What transmission came in the auto 78 malibu with a 200 v6. Accordding to the specs i have found it is supposed to be a th200, but my transmission appears to be a th250. The transmission crossmember I have under my car is even different from other malibus I have seen. I'm very confused on the whole transmission issue because supposedly the th200 cannot even bolt up to my engine being a chevy motor. The th250 is supposed to be only on the chevy motor but people I have talked to have claimed that their buicks and monte carlos with 3.8L have th250s. Please help me. Every time I work on this car I hit a brick wall with trying to find parts. Everything listed to go with it seems to end up being for the 3.8L setup. I often end up having to cross-reference el camino parts to get the right ones. Maybe I'm just surrounded by idiots who don't know the difference in the two engine setups. thanks for your help.

I've seen this info before and it does lead me to believe that I have a th250. The part that confuses me is that according to all the information that came with my car says its a th200. It wouldn't surprise me if that info is wrong. Many things on my car have been different from what was supposed to be there. I had the build sheet and all the original documentation when I got the car and what was actually in the car didn't match. I know all of it came from the factory because of the condition and history of the car when I got it. But I do have one more question. If I do have a th250 how much power can I put to it, and is there a way to beef it up to take more power without spending too much money.

An easy way to tell is count the pan bolts. A 200/200C will have 11 Bolts, where as a 250/250C 350/350C will have 13. Both have similar shaped pans, a square with one corner missing, but the 200's are smaller and have 2 less bolts. The 250's are not very common, are you sure you have this trans?

I'm thinking you have a 350 since that is a much more common transmission and I don't know how you think that everything is factory original on your car

I got my car with 20000 miles on it. It only had one previous owner. She was an older lady who purchased it in Illinois and moved to Louisiana with it in 82 then stopped driving it in 92. I have every receipt and record from every time the car even had an oil change. I know it was all factory when I got it and I can prove it. Would it really be a th350 not a th250 like it should have with the 3.3L. How can I find out exactly what is in it. Is there a tag on it or some identifying mark that I can look at?

back in 78 they used components that were available that day so the RPO codes may not mean too much...gm called it "manufacturing options"...

but if you look at the pan....

"The THM200 and the THM250 have pans shaped like a THM350, HOWEVER, the THM200 will have the words HYDRAMATIC DIV. and METRIC stamped into the pan."

There may be a code (2 or 3 digit I believe) on the bell housing that may designate what it is, get the code, I might be able to look it up for you. Yes the 250 can be built up, it is basically just a light duty 350, rebuild it with the extra clutch discs and steels and you should be good to go (I had a 250, and did this to it). Th350 and 250 rebuild kits are the same.
Transmission Identification can be Located in One of Three Positions on the Transmission.
A. Identification Plate on Side of Case
B. Stamping Number on Governor Cover
C. Ink Stamped on Bell Housing.

olds...I seem to remember a thread about building up a 250 and one of the questions was if it was worth the parts and labor since 350's are readily available and much stronger than a 250

I'm not sayin to just do it, but if it needs a rebuild, you're already there and if you already have the rebuild kit, it doesn't cost anything to put the discs and steels in. If I remember right (it has been about 8yrs since I di it) the 250 had a couple extra wave rings to make up the difference vs the 350 had extra clutch discs and steels. If both were sitting on the ground next to you, identical, pick them both up and you'll know whats what, lol. So really there's no extra cost in rebuilding it (if need be).
