I just broke the trunk lock of my 79 Malibu coupe so I cannot open the trunk anymore. How do I fix this?! Is there any possibility to pry the lock without damaging the lid from outside? Or should I try to fix it from the inside but that's difficult as it's a coupe. So I cannot fold down the back bench , plus there is a metal plate between the bench and the trunk itself which is not meant to demount...
I appreciate any helpful advice. Thanks. Stevie

Just drill it out. I wouldn't use a huge bit though. Once the internals of the lock are drilled out, you can use a long flathead to open the trunk. You'll be able to see a slot inside for the screwdriver to fit. You can get new lock cylinders at a parts store.

x2. The metal plate behind the seat would not have been there from the factory otherwise you could have unbolted the rear seat and reach in with a ratchet and a couple of extensions to remove the 3 bolts on the trunk latch. When you get the lid open you will need to remove the rivit and clip then the lock just pulls out.

Don't know what these others are talking.....if it was me I would just drill it..........

you can take the back seat out then the thing behind the seat, attatch a couple of extensions and just unbolt the trunk latch, no need for drilling, take the lock cylinder out and use a screw driver to open it after that
