my dad is constanly comming up with ideas for my cutlass. the other day he told me about an idea of his that wasnt that bad. he wanted to put a turbo on my tired 307 to wake it up a bit. my dad and my brother both have wrxs that have turboed four cylinders, but they both upgraded their uppipes and down pipes.

so because i already have oem piping, all i would need is a wrx turbo, and i would get an intercooler that woul be mounted behind the grills of my cutty with a blow off valve. this would require a custom made exhaust that goes to the turbo. and a lot of other custom fabrications.

this idea is still in progress but i am very interested to see if it would work, and if it is worth the effort.

i was wondering if anyone else has turboed their 307 or at least attempted to.
lemme know what you guys think.
thanks, mike

And here we have the crux of the problem. It's very easy to think that "Hey, I have this turbo (which may or may not be matched to the engine) and all I have to do is bend and weld a few pipes..."

Reality is much different. The bottom line is that you can probably build a very strong 455 with more HP and certainly more torque for the money it will take to get this project running. Of course, in either case there's the problem (and cost) of beefing up the rest of the drivetrain to match.

this wouldnt be as exspensive as building up a 455, because chances are i would find one for 500 dollars and then have to get it rebuilt, this setup would only be costing me a turbo, intercooler w/bov, headers, and alot of time.

And you're not the first person who thinks they can do this for $500. More power to you if you can pull it off. You'll understand if I don't hold my breath.

You will need a new cam. Something will have to be done with your induction system. Ignition will need to be upgraded. And I'm not to sure, but don't turbos work at higher RPMs? How high will a stock 307 rev? And then you will also probably need a different torque converter (if I'm right about the reving part). Also, how well will those stock 307 heads flow?

I thought about doing turbo a while back. Then I reserched it and all the extra costs and it was just to expensive. It's not hard to find some old 70's Olds with a 350 or 455 for $500-1000. Throw an oil pump, cam, timing set, and rebuild the carb and your good to go. And you'll probably get more power from this that a turbo 307.

I'm not saying it's a bad idea (would be pretty cool actually), but it's just not as cheap as you might think.

well, if you won't say it, I will...

It's a bad idea... Don't do it. :blam:

... for all the reasons already said above...

Sorry to be JackAssy... but someone needs to say it

I agree bad idea, old motor with like 6 pounds of boost... even thats pushing it hahaha, find something that makes better power!

oh no the turbo 307 topic AGAIN!

just read the horod article about junkyard turbo builds. basically dont do it, chances are the turbo will either spool up too quick or delayed, causing headaches....
