Extra-credit exam question. I need my driveshaft shortened now that I have stepped up to an 8.5. I might just get one fabricated new, since I need to fit a Ford 31-spline yoke to it in order to match the Tremec TKO. I am trying to make the driveshaft length measurement. With the car on the ground, how much of the yoke sealing surface should show on the output of the tailhousing seal?

Next - bearings. When I search under Regal with 3.8T, Rock Auto lists both a 1-1/8" and a 1-3/16" bearing size. In a stock configuration, the U-joint is the same in the front and rear locations, so I prefer to replicate the 8.5 yoke bearing size at the other end. For my application, I know the Ford-style yoke uses a Spicer 1310, and I think the GM driveshaft uses a 331 (Spicer 1350, 1-3/16") with an clip that fits into a groove in the yoke ears. There is also a 534G (Mechanics 3, 1-1/8") for the GM that has a lock ring that fits into a groove around the bearing caps.

I don't know if this will help but you can get conversion U joints. I got mine from Napa, the A body rear I have uses a 1310 and the driveshaft is the 1350.

If you have a driveshaft made, we used Denny's on my brother's 78 Z28 with a T56 Magnum. The quality is top notch. This might help on your measurement question.

Even if you don't use Denny's, print and use their form for your measurements.

Y'know, I had that axle in the garage on sawhorses for over a year. Why didn't I check the yoke size while it was right in front of me? Doh....
