Valvoline 10-40 Where did it go???????

I've noticed certain weight oils are not as easy to find these days. I'm sure because newer cars run a much lighter weight oil such as 5w/20, 0w/20, 5w/30, etc.

I've been using Shell Rotella 15w/40 in the Chevy and Valvoline 20w/50 VR1 in the Porsche.
However, I understand that Shell has reduced the ZDDP content in their oil.
Does any of the other diesel oils provide a good dose of zinc? Like the Delo 400, etc.

Brad Penn oil is from the original Kendal GT1 green formula which was a regular diet for my cars when it was available...and reasonably priced.

Finding good oil nowadays is hard. Rotella does NOT have the needed ZDDP in it anymore for flat tappets. I used to run nothing but Brad Penn but even Brad Penn has gone down hill with the new owners. After losing an engine earlier this year I did some homework on what I would run in the new one.

I ended up using Maxima Racing oil with WIX filters after talking to a few local engine shops. Maxima or Schaeffer oil is what they all recommended. I had known for a few years to stay away from Rotella but I was a little sad when I was told to stay away from Brad Penn.

I’ve used diesel oil in everything for years. Better cleaning additives and contamination control. Also helped that it was free because we used so much at work for the big diesels.

This will sound kinda crazy but the company I work for uses Rotalla T6 and after adopting a new filter system we don’t change oil less than 2000hr. New filters every 300hrs and sampling, that’s it. Big V12 2500hp Cat diesels that are run pretty hard plus all the tractor engines. I can’t say I personally agree with it but for the past 2 years I’ve been here it’s worked. Food for thought anyway.

Thankfully, I'm all roller cams now, so the ZDDP doesn't matter. I run Carquest synthetic in the truck and the Pig; I believe it's made by Valvoline. Hadn't heard about the Brad Penn change; I guess I'll just switch the 67 to Carquest as well.

That's what I thought but actually most cam manufacturers will request oil with ZDDP additive anyway. I have a Howards hydraulic roller, Howards wants ZDDP in it and my local shop recommended me Maxima Racing oil which has 2x the ZDDP than most oils that advertise having it. The dirt burner guys also use the additive in their roller engines.

Not sure what changed about the Brad Penn oil, and keep in mind everything im saying is coming from a more high performance point of view. A mild roller might live fine with no additive and the newer Brad Penn. Personally I wouldn't be willing to risk it just to save a few bucks at oil change time.

Thank you for contacting Valvoline Product Support with your question. Although we do still offer Valvoline Conventional 10W-40 motor oil, many retailers choose to not keep it on their shelves since it is less popular than other viscosity grades which are used more frequently throughout the industry. Although your local auto parts stores may not keep this specific product in stock, they can order it for you should you choose to request they do so. Also, many of our customers have found numerous online retailers which are great sources for Valvoline products which local stores may not carry. Some of these include Amazon.com or Grainger Industrial Supply.

If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us via phone at 800 TEAM VAL or by email at [email protected] for assistance.

Thank you and have a great day.

I was wondering about 4-stroke motorcycle oil. I heard that some of them use a significant amount of zinc. I'll have to read up on the subject.
