I think a lot of you guys are confusing historical plates with actual vintage plates

In Ohio the year of manufacture plates fall under historical plates.

Interesting how States differ. Another thing in NY is that any plate from the correct era qualifies. So a taxi or truck plate can go on a car. I even saw an actual 1970's Historical plate on Epay but it said something like 1923-A so it wouldn't have looked right. I also had the original plates I kept from my '68 Firebird but they were crunched and that disqualified them. You can't restore plates at all, must be totally original.

Mark,
Down here in Florida you can either acquire "antique" tags for a vehicle 30 yrs old and older...or pick-up a tag same year as your vehicle. The old tag would have to be sent to Tallahassee for approval before you can register it.
They do not approve of restored or rusty tags.
I had picked up a '64 tag for my other car. I was in good shape but has a small rust hole on the bottom. I don't think they'll accept that. It does have an antique tag currently.
I had an extra '65 tag that I had given to a friend with a Cobra kit car. He was able to register the car using the '65 tag.
I can't understand how a replica kit car can be considered a '65. I know that Shelby had built Cobras in '65 based on the AC Bristol.
Classic car insurance is a limited use policy. Mine is up to 2500 miles per year. The car must be garaged, used for car shows or parades, and they allow for occasional maintenance runs.
You also must have a registered daily driver.
My wagon will be getting an antique tag this year, not that I consider it an antique. Florida used to issue a tag labeled "collectible ". Every old POS pickup or clapped out old Dodge Dart had a collectible tag on it. That really irked me.

this is what we have in Ontario..I can't get the historical plate cause I my GP isn't quite what it was when it left the assembly line and it's my DD in the summer

Licence plates with the "historic" designation are available at Driver and Vehicle licensing offices and Service Ontario centres. To qualify, vehicles must be at least 30 years old and substantially unchanged or unmodified from the original manufacturer product.

YOM plates are Ontario licence plates that can be attached to a passenger vehicle, motorcycle or commercial vehicle under 3,000 kg made in the same year as the plates. For example, original plates issued in 1959 may be attached to a vehicle made in 1959. To attach privately-acquired YOM plates (the ministry does not provide these scarce relics), the vehicle must meet the same criteria for "historic" plates, as above, and the plates must be from Ontario.

Upon application, the plates will be examined by ministry staff to verify authenticity. Only full sets of original plates dating from 1903 onward are allowed. Replica plates, no matter how realistic, will not be approved.

Yes, and I also had to call the Custom Plates Unit in Albany and read them the plate digits. They said both sets I had were valid. So even though they accept anything from that era, they must be total originals.

I know PA has classic and antique. Classic I'm sure has some mileage and time of use restrictions.

My car still has the plates from 86 on it . MR442 You cant run old plates but probably could with a current sticker if registration was up to date.

But As soon as Garage is done I'll be checking into insurance to drive. I got $15000 storage on it now

To some extent, any leniency you get from the state or from insurance companies on older cars is self-limiting. Two years ago, I drove one of my AV plate cars over the summer every possible chance I got. No rain, but any other time. Work, grocery shopping, hardware store, eating out, cruise nights. Also took a road trip of a few hundred miles. At the end of the summer, I had barely hit 3,000 miles. The DD sees about 20k miles a year.

Update- the Post Office lost my Vintage Plates application that I sent Certified Mail. It was mis-sent to a wrong zip and the scans end there. I called them to ask what's up and they said they sent it back to the processing plant. That was 5 days ago. Hmmmmm..............

In Michigan we can get a new historical plate or use an authentic plate with the correct year and tag for a vehicle that is 25+ years old. I bought a 1979 MI car plate with an 83' sticker and mailed in the required items( photo of the new plate, copy of title and insurance) and just received my new registration. This was a one time fee of $35 and is good until you sell, tranfer or scrap the car( they recently changed "modify" to "scrap")

And another plus is my specialty insurance will go down about $120 a year since in MI we have the MCCA(Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association) which you pay over and above your standard insurance quote and on every car you insure but I think multiple cars on the same policy get a break.

The restrictions for the plate and insurance is about the same around 3000 miles for cars shows, parades and things of that nature. The insurance also wants the car locked in my garage or an approved location at night and requires I have an insured daily driver.
So from here on out I should be saving about $150 a year with no yearly plate renewal and reduced insurance.

Currently my car has been off the road for several months, and will continue to be off the road undergoing a transformation.
The registration renewal is coming due in a month. I'm going to opt for a "antique" tag, being that it is over 30 yrs old.
My concern is, can I get vintage car insurance while the car is down and going thru it's renovation stage?
I realize that classic insurance companies require pictures of the car..both sides, etc. It will be a limited use vehicle when it's done.
...or should I just cancel the insurance until the car is roadworthy again?
