Volt gauge question

Okay that fuse is good. I do get power there too with a test light with key on. I have the cluster apart but the bulbs are recessed 3” down into their holes. Do i use pliers on these ??
Nevermind i got it. Bulb is good however. Looking at all bulbs at the moment. What can i look for next?

Edit. None of these bulbs work when i pull headlight switch out

The bulbs in the idiot lights are good?

That’s got me stumped honestly.

However, if your fuel gauge isn’t working, there’s something out of place in the gauge power circuit from the fuse to the cluster. Since you have it apart, check everything you can see. I don’t know if the Malibu clusters have a printed circuit board on the back, but if it does, make sure the copper isn’t split on it or corroded.

Could you take a few pictures of what you’re working with?

Okay pics are attached. I have determined the connector as follows - see pics. I am getting power at the connector with test light. So my guess is its the printed board is not making contact. The board * appears * to be fine to me for its age. Could not find any cracks. I have also tried to jump from hard connector to board and cannot get lights to illuminate although i have to admit its hard to hold everything in place. What can i do next?

Let’s clear up some confusion first:
The lights Im talking about are not your dash lights, so they won’t light up with the head lights on. They will only receive power with the ignition in the RUN position, so you need your key on to even check the lead on the alternator end to begin with.
If your dash illumination lights (the ones that are supposed to come on with the headlight switch pulled out) arent on, that’s another kettle of fish entirely, so don’t worry about those right now.

Put the cluster back in, turn the key to the run position, and check the field wire again. If you’re still having problems, check the gauge cluster power wires on the cluster connector. If those don’t have power, the problem is somewhere between there and the fuse panel.

Double check and make sure you’ve pulled the correct bulbs too, just to be sure.

Here’s a (build?) website with the pinout of the connector for a long sweep style speedo.
It’s the first pic you’ll see.

Agreed but these lights arent working either. In other words i have power at various points on the connector but dont think its making contact with anything on the gauge cluster. Which is why my idiot light wont function. Which is why my alternator wont put out charge. Just trying to clear up what i was trying to say. Field wire is dead. Im about to dig into these links now.

Ok guys thanks for the links. It appears #14 is the alt light connector. With key ON, probing #14 with test light gets me nothing. My understanding is i should have power here - which i do not.

Check to see if you’re getting power across the fuse next.
Are you referring to this fuse? When i pull the fuse i get power on the right side with test light with key on. Fuse is good
