Jump +12V to the green wire and see if the gray wire at the insterment panel connector goes hot.

ELCAM thanks for all the help. Does this indicate my switch is bad - incompleting the dash circuit - incompleting the L wire on alternator ???

Pretty much all it can be is a bad headlight switch unless the terminal is corroded real bad or connector is damaged.

On the alternator try, with a pick bend the terminals on the connector out so they have more spring tension, gentle does it. Also clean the terminals.

Otherwise look for breaks in the printed circuit. Make sure the bulb socket contacts are not bent or corroded. clean the printed circuit contacts with a pencil eraser always pulling to the free (loose) end do not go back and forth.

Remember that printed circuit was fragile when it was new, 40 years later it is extremely fragile.

On the headlight switch turn the knob back and forth the lamps are dimmable and I think it can be turned off if dimmed all the way.

That is a wire wound potentiometer and a wire could have burned out. You can check the switch with an ohm meter, there should be numbers on the switch the green wire goes to 2 and the power is from 3 put your ohm meter across 2 and 3 and see if it is open (infinite ohms) or does it vary as you turn the knob.

Edited to fix errors.

Ok thanks again. How do i remove the headlight switch knob??

on the back of the switch (the flat metal side) there is a spring loaded plunger about in the center. Pull the knob out like turning the lights on and depress the plunger. The knob and shaft should pull out then.

Or the fuse.
Ok so I picked up a headlight switch in town. I now have dash illumination but still no idiot lights. I started car and alternator is not charging. I still do not have +12v on L wire (at alternator) with key on …
