When I tried this with the big blocks, the results were not pretty, and I am told that it was because a lack of information was present. So, vote on what you feel are the top 2 transmissions from the list above, and once again, defend your choice below.

The car is an 86 Olds Cutlass Brougham with an Olds 455 complete with "E" heads, 850 cfm quadrajet, headers, bored .060 over, and camed. The rear is a Ford 9" SPOHN rear end with 3.73? rear end, and the car IS street legal. It makes 600? h.p. and the car will be driven on a road trip from Iowa to California to Alabama and back to Iowa again. Bill Gates has given the "owner" a blank check so the budget is limitless and the "owner" is not affraid to try anything, including using computers on the car. And as far as bolting the transmission to the engine, high strength adapter plates will be used if nessicery.

As far as stall goes, or shift kits, that is up to you to decide what YOU would do.

I hope I gave enough information this time. Which of the trannys mentioned above would you choose and why? please give a 1st and 2nd vote unless you are dead set on one transmission.

If I have managed to piss anyone off this time,I will simply delete the post.

It’s sad that you have to add the disclaimer about pissing people off – some people here need to lighten up a little bit. This is just a chat board where we can express our opinions.

Your posts are just fine. :)

3.73's + highway roadtrips = overdrive is a must!

I chose the 200-4R as first choice for the overall simplicity of the install.
Once funds allow, I'll be taking the TH400 out of my 442 and putting a 200-4R back in behind the 455.

The 4L80E came in second if you want to tinker with technology.

I have to agree with Blake, overdrive will be a must with a big block going on road trips, I voted for the 200R4. I would match it up with a 2500-3000 stall

i agree with F_L_B BTW. they should post their opinions and why, not whine that they can't make up their mind if they're not spoon fed the info.
anyway, i went with the 200-4r (2nd choice) as it's a good general use trans.
my personal favorite (right now) is actually the 6l80e as it's 6spds and based on the 4l80e architecture (my 1st vote) and as such is very strong. IIRC the weight has come down quite a bit too.

Will the person installing it be intoxicated?

ET=12.06 seconds. Elapsed time for that big block to snap the metric that is.

I have to say though, my first car was an 83 Grand Prix. It had a 305 with a 200 metric behind it. With my 16 year old wisdom, I found it entertaining to neutral drop the car at 3000 rpms to spin the tires all the time. I drove the car for about 2 years and the transmission held up. Surprising, even though there was probably about 100hp at the wheel (not a typo).

I vote T-400 just because it's so tough that you can beat on it all day with a 455 and highway gears and it shrugs it off. I know the modern version with overdrive is SUPPOSED to be stronger but we'll see. Plus the T-400 can be built to super-duty specs by every shop in the universe, in fact I rebuilt one in my garage and I'm an idiot.
