Ok I brought home my new (to me) 1987 Monte Carlo LS this weekend. It has the 4.3 l efi in it, and runs well on the street, but it has a weird idle when you rev it. It has 54,000 original miles on it, and the car is about 95% original stock. The previous owner, who bought it fromthe original owner about a year ago, only installed a few new parts....rotors/drums, plug wires, fuel pump, what I would call just maintenance items. When you first start it up, it starts ok, then the rpm drops some, then the idle levels out some and when it's in gear and driving, it seems to be ok. But at idle, if you rev it above say 1,500 rpm, it stumbles a lot. Never to the point of stalling or anything, but there is a big stumble and RPM drop then levels out again. This is my first venture into anything computer controlled, and I am so concerned about tweeking anything on this car in the fear of screwing up the computer or putting the check engine light on. I am used to how many turns to screw in the mixture screws on my q-jet. I still have to get in tune with what componants are first to star wearing down and breaking on these things. I know the great and mysterious Joe P is on these forums. He is always helping me with my dumb questions over on Classic Olds. So where do I begin??

I have been searching through all the other threads, and am still looking. I have a ton to learn about these things. Could it be some sensor, like throttle position, oxygen, etc...? From the look of the engine I am pretty sure nothing like that has ever been replaced. I would really like to try and figure this out myself, put I may just had to take it to the family mechanic to see what he can find. Anybody have any ideas??!!?? HELP!!

Ok slowly but surely I am learning. Just realized what TBI and TPI are, explains why I didn't read anyone talking about "efi" on their engines. So I have efi that is a tbi unit. So everything is controlled by the sensors and ecu. So the tbi is the weird looking thing on my engine that has the 2 injectors as opposed to the tbi which is the modern setup with injectors in each cylinder. Sorry for being so unknowlegable, I'm a carb guy, but I'm learning. So the ecu, is that something that craps out? Can it be repaired or do you just replace it? I have seen on parts sites that they are not too expensive. ???

injectors on each intake port is not tbi its multi port fuel injection. you need to go take a class or two. so before you do that close the hood and step away from the vehicle. lol
if you are unsure of the next course of action, dont attempt anything man. take it to a shop, or grab a buddy that knows what hes doin.

you could probably use a upper intake cleaning and a motor-vac on the injectors from what it sounds like

Your probably right Chevyman! I'm just going to take it to my mechanic and see what he says. That's why I was hesitant about getting something computer controlled. Every car I have ever owned has either had a q-jet or been so new that the warrenty department took care of everything, even oilchanges. This efi suff is so foreign to me. I'm sure I will learn over time, but for right now this Monte is my puttering around town car while I work on my 1972 Cutlass and get it's 455 running top notch. I just want to get it tuned up and running as efficiantly as possible, and as you said, right now that is not possible with my limited expierience. Maybe someday!
