I have a 84 el camino and it sometimes make a clinking noise or as my girlfriend explains it a rock hitting a empty pop can. It's only when I put it into gear or if I manually downshift into first or second and get on it, it makes the noise and it only does it once it's not a continuous noise. I have no idea where its coming from its hard to pinpoint exactly where it's coming from

have yer girl shift yer car while you listen under the car. make sure the parking brake is on so she doesnt run over yer head. ot could be something to do with your linkage.

only one way to find out, jack the front of yer car up or use them ramp thingys, then put some wheel chocks behind and in front of the rear tire, then get under there and have yer girl shift from p to 1 slowly while yer under there and look and listen. if slowly doesnt werk have her shift from p to d like you 'normally' would. make sure the cars off and the parking brake is on and wheel chocks...etc.

It doesn't do it everytime I shift it into gear just sometimes and would a u joint make a clinking noise and would the driveline move if I had a bad u joint I mean like back and forth?
Take a small pry bar and pry around the U-Joint,look for the caps to be loose where the joint goes into them,Yes a worn joint will make a Pop or a Tink type noise when the drive shaft is loaded.
