Chevy 305 from an 85 camaro. Non EGR. Makes a weird knocking.. More like a clattering sound at 2000 rpm then goes away with more throttle or less. Any ideas? Pulling engine in a month or so and want to know where to look thanks.

Does the noise occur in park? or in drive on the highway? If it happens while on the road, its likely a drivetrain noise, such as a u joint, torque converter or maybe the harmonic balancer. Also, its possible that it could be fan blades hitting the shroud. If it doesnt happen on the road, its likely an internal engine part, or maybe, hopefully, a fan clutch....good luck...keep us posted!

Happens all the time. In park, or going down the road. Has an electric fan so that couldn't be it. Sorry for not posting that the first time. Sounds like something higher up in the block. Boiled over twice. Once because the fan wasnt wired right and another because the battery couldnt power the fan. Both times we hadn't realised the fans were not on.

I usually locate sounds by the speed of the knocking/ticking and the kind of metallic sound....for instance something solid like a crank vs a tinny sound like a flex plate. Speed would be fast like lifters or water pump bearings vs something like a slower crank rpm. You guys probably think I'm nuts lol. Works for me though. You could also use a stethoscope, or just get a length of hose and listen to different areas of the engine.

A few odd sounds that people have problems trouble shooting are mistaking exhaust manifold outlet leaks for ticking lifters, a bad EFE diaphragm causing the flapper inside the manifold to flop all over the place, and loose torque converter bolts making a lot of clanging. I've also had the plastic torque converter inspection cover/bellhousing cover distort just enough in cold weather to contact the flexplate and make a horrendous noise! Just some ideas.

Could be detonation. Trying running better fuel.

I would guess detonation too if the sound occurs under load. To the OP, have you messed with the timing at all?

Yes, it did it before we messed with it too. It used to be when i would go down the road and jump on it, it would bog down and blow back through the carb. We fixed that but knocking hasnt gone away. And its a really fast knock.

Is it sometimes hard to start? Sometimes fires right up and other times sounds like it's fighting against very advanced timing?
If it does that, I'd look for a badly stretched timing chain and possibly a wiped cam lobe (or two...).
