My wife hated the way I was being taught by my instructor from Paris, France. She often said no Franco-Canadian would ever speak like that.

It's the same with English you learn in school over here and American English.
When a former co-worker of mine was sent from the US to Germany for a project and found out that most Germans speak at least German and English, he asked me what second language I'd recommend him to learn, I told him "English would be nice". <- Took a while for him to get over it. 🙈
