What got you in to Cutlasses/G Bodies?

I have always liked big cars especially the Oldsmobiles

My first car was a base 1980 Malibu 4 door sedan(was considered an A body at the time) that was puke green(I am sure GM had some BS name for it like Pine Green or something like that) It was my grandparents 2nd car(their main car was a 1982 Lesabre and then a 1986 LeSabre) My folks then got it and then I got it. It had the 3.8l v6 and the THM-200C(which we all know is a sh*t trans) the THM200C in that car like others before and after had issues. In my case it would not go into 3rd gear unless you lifted your foot off the pedal for a second and then it went in. I drove the car like that for 3 years and it had no other issues mechanically but the body was falling apart so I got rid of it.

In 2003 I had a 1985 Delta 88(last of the big Olds) and drove that for a little while until the brake lines rotted and leaked and I dumped it

In 2005 I bought a 1987 Cutlass 4 door sedan from my brother for $1000. He had bought this car from a family friend a year before and was selling the car to raise money to buy a 1972 Cutlass S so i bought the 1987. It was in great condition but I could never get the carb to behave and even with a rebuild and then replacement with a new carb(I tracked a NOS Carb down). I wound up getting rid of it when my grandmother on my mom's side sold me her 92 GMC S-10/S-15 Jimmy

Here is a pic of it from back when I was on Oldspower.com

At the end of july I was looking for a beater car for the winter and came upon two G-Bodies. (I was looking at Caprices or Roadmasters but ether they were overpriced or mutilated with those stupid rims that look like they go on a large truck. I also looked at FWD A bodies(like the Ciera and Century)

One was a 1984 Buick Regal 2 door(for 1200) and the other a 1985 Cutlass Supreme sedan (for 1000). The Regal was sold before I got there so I looked at the Cutlass and bought it. It had some issues which I mentioned in my post in the new member section but over all it was in good shape for a 27 year old $1000 car. None of which stopped me from driving the car.

Oddly a few days later a 1987 Monte Carlo LS came up for sale and had i waited I most likely would have bought that as it was fuel injected (and I know the ins and outs of the 4.3l engine) and in good enough shape for $1000 but i don't regret buying the cutty

Unlike in the past where if the car needed a repair or I wanted to modify it, I needed to make sure it was ready to drive to work on the following Monday and that caused me to get rid of them when parts could not be found in quick time, this time If it has an issue or part are not able to be gotten before the next work day, I can let it sit and wait because I have another car(2012 Scion XB that is my daily driver) so I plan on keeping this car for a long time.

Ever since i was a kid (born in 86) i loved seeing that era's muscle cars, the ones that caught my attention the most were the firebirds, transams, and the g-bodies. Bought one last month, have been in love with it ever since.

I've been an Oldsmobile guy all my life, and since I already have a Poncho A-body as a long term project, someday Ill have to get a Cutlass for a daily, just gotta make it cost effective first.

I got into G-bodies almost completely by accident. I've had an '85 Olds Delta 88 for almost 4 years now, I got it from my grandma on my 19th birthday. I actually grew up in that car, so I have several fond memories in that car. She tried to give the car to me in high school, but being a normal 16 year old, I threw a fit & rejected it in favor of a big pickup truck. So fast foward 3 years, gas has shot up, I'm no longer in high school, and my grandma wants to clean up our property (we have several non running vehicles on our property) and she starts to talk about sending the old girl to the crusher. So now having a few more years to learn to be sensible about bigger is not always better (I love my 454 powered Chevy, but its a bit of a pig on fuel). So, appropriately enough, I threw another fit about her wanting to destroy such a classic car, especially since I had so many memories attached to the big 'ole boat. So she said "Fine, it's yours, but you have to have it drivable in 6 months." I said "Deal!" Took me 8 months to get it street legal... So recently I decided that I wanted a project w/ way more aftermarket support than a Delta 88. So started looking for a Cutlass to work on and drive daily to save a bit more fuel than my Delta. Started looking for a basic V6 or V8 Cutlass, and two weeks into my search I came across a real deal '84 Hurst/Olds Cutlass. Went to look at it, very rough looking, but as far as I can tell, it's complete. Guy was asking $2500 on the car, I offered him $2900 if he would let me make payments on it. So we struck the deal, and I'm currently making payments on what will soon be my first G-body, and my first Cutlass, second Oldsmobile, and probably the only somewhat collectable car I'll ever have. So I've been bitten by the bug, and do I have it bad!

I got into Gbodies from being around my dad and the cars growing up. He's had several monte's and a cutlass. I remeber being a little kid out in the garage helping him and always thinking his 86 ss was the coolest car ever.

I like the lines of the Regal. And I liked the handling characteristic of the full frame long wheel base that allows you to swing the *ss out to an extreme angle and still keep your foot in it and drive back under the slide.

I've always been a motor head because of my dad and have always driven and liked cars that could easily house a V8 without problems.

I think what got me into these great cars is I grew up with them. My grandfather had several Oldsmobiles - Cutlass and Delta 88. He also had a 442. My father had Malibu's and Monte Carlo's. My cousin had an Olds 442. My second and third cars were both G-Bodies, a 1984 Grand Prix and a 1985 Grand Prix. I built up the 1985 into a nice show car that got many compliments. After I sold it in the late 90's I really wanted another one, but at the time I had another project I was working on. I've been looking for the right one for a while, and I never knew that secretly my wife loved these cars as well. So we were both drawn back in and bought one to restore not too long ago.

Funny story - I still see my 1985 Grand Prix on the road in a town called Toms River, about 10 miles north of my home. I've tried to catch the guy driving it - I'd love to buy it back. It looks beaten and worn, not anywhere near the condition I sold it in. But that says something that it is still running.

has always been my favorite car, and the 72 w-30 442 and a '59 Thunderbird (grandfathers),my uncle had a '71 Nova SS 396 , those were my child hood cruisers, but the 78-80's gbodies have been my favorite cars since as long as i could remember, helped my buddy drop a 455 a 86 cutty supreme brougham after that got my first , was a blue /grey/orange '83 H/O pace car- got stolen, then '87 442 -totaled, now an '85 442

Well I am younger, and don't have a lot of money, but was looking for an inexpensive project car. Impossible, right? Well then I found the regal. I wanted something I could take to a car show when I was done, and as soon as I looked at a regal I though 'GN'. So I set out to buy a regal for $1000 or less and clone it into a turbo regal. Well, I did find a car, and my priorities have since changed. So I no think I am going to turn my 87 regal limited into a t type look a like, with w02 blackout, t type steering wheel, a nice set of rims, dual exhausts, bucket seats, air dams, and who knows, maybe even a spoiler and turbo hood. Pretty much everything except the turbo, and floorshift, because that is what my budget allows. But I believe the car will be nice in the end, much bettter than it was with that vinyl top, 60/40 seats, chrome trim, and ugly sun burnt paint.
