I know this is a question that has been asked time and time again, but I can't find one that answers my specific case. My car has the 3.8 n/a 2 bbl v6, and 3 speed column shift (don't think it matters) transmission. My gears are PRND21. So what trans does my car have? Transmissions aren't my thing, but I'm learnin. Any info appreciated.

you could have the th350c, a th250C or the 200metric. the 250 and 350 trannies are 3 speed trans that have a lock up torque converter. the 200 metric is a small 4 speed trans with a lock up torque convertor. those are the most common.

this may help ya

he could also have a regular 350 non-lockup. My 1980 Had a Non-lockup but was labeled PRNDSL until I swapped in a Rally Pac. I know that sometime after 1980 the 350c (lockup) came out, but who knows what happened before he bought it.

i had a 85 Cutlass that was a 6 banger 3 speed car for a few years. for the longest time i thought it had a 350 transmission considering the 13 bolt pan and the way the layout of the vacuum modulator, and the bolted on tail shaft. Well when the transmission went out on me I noticed that there was a bolt with a nut on it that hung out the right side of the trans, behind the cooling lines. I took it up to a transmission shop to be looked at and instead of paying 600 bucks to have it rebulit, It cost me 375. The guy told me it was a twin to the 350, a TH250C. I was happy with the price and when i installed the trans, it worked great even after i sold the car.

True, i think the lockup was brought in to full production in 81. But i did get a 350 that was lockup from a 78 cutlass once. Found out that it was a test transmission that was put in the car from factory and lasted about 130,000 before it was rebuilt. when i got it, I found the papers in the clove box along with the service records.

that is pretty normal milage for a transmission in a car with no power. The 350 was overbuilt for the engines it was put behind. You can not squeal the tires of a 3.8 no matter how hard you try.

wow. I did not know about the 250. I wonder if that explains why my original transmission stalled a lot when I stopped hard. Sounds like that was a common problem with the 250. When I put my new engine in I swapped in a rebuilt 350 because my old transmission had a wrong bolt pattern for Olds and Buick. My new one is SBC.

Oh hell yea I know, i got 3.8 with a th350c and i wont do a damn thing, even with stock wheels and tire sizes. I tryed it with just a 307 that i put the trans behind in the 85 i had and it wouldnt burn rubber to save its life. But One thing i couldnt figure out was i built a 455 wildcat with a 200 metric and that transmission took everything i put thru it. :wtf:

yea i read a couple posts on a corvette forum from a guy that had a 250c in his regal and he said that the lockup would stay engaged sometimes while coming to a stop which would cause his car to stall out. he said that he would have to put it in neutral to clear it. that or it wouldn't go into 2nd thru a manual shift. He'd have to skip 2nd to shift up or to down shift.
