Ok, I've been into G bodies for a long time, but keep getting mixed answers as to what automatic trans they came with. First I was told that my 78 would have had a TH350, but I'm sure that it should have come with the 200-R4. Which one is it?

I dont think they put 200R4 transmissions in G bodies in 78. If it is a 3 speed it is most likely a TH-350 or a TH200. I am thinking for that year it is a 350 but I am just guessing.

Not 100% but i dont think the 200r4 cam out until like 84/85is,as far a 78 it could be turbo 350 or the 200 metric depending whats in front of it.The pan tells the whole story metrics have metic stamped on the bottom,350s are almost square, except the back left corner is slanted.

If its the original transmission to the car then it would not be a 200-4R. i think they started making them in 81[not sure]. it would be a 200 or 350.

G bodies did not get the TH 200 4R installed stock until 1984 or 1985.

Thanks for the help guys, problem is my 78 came sans engine and transmission. I got a TH350 offered to me by a co-worker who has a few g-body parts lying around. Just for future reference, would the VIN # tell you what trans the car left the factory with?

'83 or '84 was the debut year for the TH200-4R in the G-body.

The vin won't tell you the trans the car came with, but it will tell you the engine. You can then do some reverse searching and probably figure out what trans was bolted behind your engine originally.

If they're both gone now though, it doesn't really matter, since you can put any trans in you can imagine. A TH200 is worthless, so you might as well put the TH350 in. I even think you'll be able to use the stock crossmember regardless of what was there originally, cause I think they're the same length. Somebody correct me on that if I'm wrong...
