So I want to rebuilt my transmission (wont get out of 2nd gear)that's in my 1980 El Camino with original 305 motor in it., but dont know what kinda transmission is in it, there are no stickers no where in the car or around it to indicate what kinda transmission I have. The pan is square but didnt count how many bolts are on it, no wires coming out of it, other than the vac line and transmission fluid line...?

I did take it to a Transmisson friend of my Bro-In-Laws and told me that it needs a rebuilt, but he couldnt determine what kinda transmission i have, he said I might have a th350 or a 250c?

If I have a 250c is that good enough for my 305...I was hoping to drop a 350 in it, will it fit my drive train?

should I just get a core th350 and rebuilt that one instead of the 250c if thats what I have?

in 82 they came with th350c - Im going to guess the same with 80. the 'c' model looks identical to the regular 350. There is a wire that hooks up to the 'c' on the passenger side of the 'c'
'c' has an entirely different TC and input shaft too. No way you can mistake the differences once your looking at its guts.

If your transmission has this lug it is a th250 and weak and probably wouldn't handle much of any performance. Although, if rebuilt properly, might handle a stock 305.

Wow, thanks for the picture this is going to help me alot!!..i will look at it right away, i think rain is coming all week, but if it doesnt rain tomorrow morning, i will for sure check out and see if that lug is there...would it be on the passanger side?

And yea thats true about the performance, Right know it shift's into first and second, but I dont feel that performance that my 305 wants to let out...and the 305 is rebuilt .30 over all hooked up...

So if its a th250, should i find a good usable th350 core and get that rebuilt instead? Will it have the same fitting
(drivetrain) short or tail shaft?

thanks for your info too...

He more than likely has a non-lockup TH-250/TH-350 but I highly doubt's it's a TH-250C/TH-350C. How would the factory have controlled the lockup for the torque converter on the TH-250C or TH-350C without a computer?

I don't believe any A/G-body was computerized before 1981 and to my knowledge, GM didn't use the vacuum controlled TC lockup on an A/G-body.

However as mentioned, it's easy enough to check. There will be a square weather pak connector on the driver's side of the transmission with 3 wires (I think, might be four) going to it.

If it doesn't have that, then it's a non-lockup transmission.

kool, thanks for the respond, just trying to get it ready for the summer time, and I want to get on the free way someday....lol

I will look for those wires as well!!!

For Chevrolet G (A) bodies.... If it was factory-equipped with a 305 in '80, it would have been a TH200C...229s also got them

267 and 231s got TH350s

1980 was the first year for the lockup (in 49 state cars anyway), and it was operated without a computer via a series of thermostatic ported vacuum switches and an electric/vacuum switch on the inner portion of the left fender on Malibu/El Camino models.

HOWEVER...it was pretty common for TH200s to be replaced with TH350s when they failed, as there wasn't a lot of support for the TH200.

11 pan bolts...TH200
13 pan bolts without band adjuster ...TH350
13 pan bolts with band adjuster ...TH250
Very few people look for the band adjustment and almost everyone assumes they are TH350s

As a side note...every 83 305 I've seen (and owned) had TH250Cs...not TH350s

Thanks for the info bro...whats band adjuster???im all new to this transmission stuff, and all ur knowledge is helping me out...i strongly feel like it is a th200c....

So if I get a th350s do u think It will just fall in place , should it bolt on fine? like drivetrain, tail shaft etc? i think it will?

The band adjuster is the lug in the picture I posted above.
