My buddy had the same problem in his Nissan. I told him to turn off the radio, wait until it's real quiet, and then turn the key on. You should hear the fuel pump energize, and depending where the relay is, you may hear that click also. He said he could hear the fuel pump, but not the relay (was in the engine compartment) but when the car wouldn't start, he did NOT hear the fuel pump. So we got a new relay for $12 and that was that. Now on my Daughter's Firebird, the relay was right behind the driver's side kick panel, and you could hear it click. EDIT- my 86' Pontiac manual shows it to be located on top of the passenger side inner fender. Worth a look....
