I was in the garage yesterday cleaning up the mess, and a guy pulled into the driveway because he saw the malibu up on the rotisserie. He asked if I was interested in a 4-speed setup for the malibu but he never gave me a price. So what's it worth? He's heading home tomorrow from the road trip he was on to check over if he has all the parts like the pedals, z-bar, linkage, clutch, pressure plate, shifter, trans tunnel mount, transmission and bellhousing.

Any ideas what I should be paying? Also, what's the torque/hp limit of these 4 speeds?

I've already got my TH350 rebuilt and sitting in the garage with a 2800 Stall and shift kit. Might sell one or the other if the price was right.

The saginaw trans is a POS and isn't worth the amount you could get in scrap for it.
All the other pieces are worth something though. Factory 4 speed parts are getting tough to find for these cars.
Not sure how much they are worth though. Just go with a different trans if you do buy it.

All the pieces are worth at least $400... Saginaw's aren't the best choice for anything more than stock hp, but Muncie's and T5's will bolt up to that bellhousing if I recall correctly.

I say snap the stuff up, and you can always either find a different trans, or sell find someone who'd buy the parts from you.

the pedals alone will fetch $150-200. I would scoop the stuff up if the price is right.

A saginaw is not as weak as people think. I had a sag in my Bu for several years & I BEAT on it & it never broke. The car had a 350 with a 4.56 posi in it & would go sideways into third. I used to powershift it at 6000 rpm all the time. I had more trouble keeping rearends in the car than anything else. I powershifted 2nd one night & broke an axle but the trans never caused me one ounce of trouble. if you are planning on any kind of "spirited" driving, stay away from a T5, they ARE weak. even the world class ones are only rated to 330 ft/lbs torque max. I put a T5 in my car to get the overdrive & drop the rpm's on the highway & if I knew then what I know now I would have stuck with the sag. I have broken the T5 6 times. if you need an overdrive go with a T56 or an aftermarket trans, you will be glad you did. If the T56 hadn't been so expensive when I went to the OD trans I would have used one of those instead of the T5. Would have been cheaper in the long run anyway.

I have heard of guys that have had problems with sag's running highway gears but the guys who run tall gears (4.11 & up) seem to have not nearly as many issues.
