my 80 brougham, 4 door has the 305/th350 combo with the 740 quadrajet carb. im lookin to put a shift kit, new gears out back, and a new carb just to liven things up a bit. obviously wont try and race it, but daddy likes to feel that the heartbeat that GM gave me is still tickin. whats the best carb for a budget/weekend build?

I'd find someone who knows quadrajets real well and get them to rebuild the one you have...

Ditto. Nothing like a clean, well adjusted Q-jet, especially the one that came on the car originally.

IMO (speaking from my experience only), for a street driven car it's Q-jet all the way! Better fuel economy, throttle responce at the low end, and the best sound from wide open secondaries. I bought a book (Rochester Carburetors by Doug Roe), rebuilt and tuned a Q-jet myself (a stock rebuild) and the car ran great!

thanks for the info fellas. i might just have to do that. rebuilt it once, but it was my first endeavor in the carb situation. i read the directions. did everything the way it said. but its a b***h to get it started, i have to splash gas in the carb for it to start, and adjusting it to run correctly is as hard as a virgin tryin to get laid at his first strip club. it just aint happenin. fuel, braking, and trans are my weakest skills. so ill buy the book this time instead of the directions that come with the kit. also it told me to adjust the floating valve to a certain number, but the pin never sat right. its way off from the number they told me just to make it run decent. i made sure i used all the replacement parts. does this mean the jackass who wrote the instructions doesnt know what hes talkin about, or is somethin in dire need of replacing? like i said im a noob at fuel systems. thanks for the info guys. its all for the G-bodies

Save your money the Qjets a good carb.If you want to work on the engine I would start with a good tune up and dual exhaust. If you want even more hp headers and a cam upgrade just don't over cam the engine go on the small side.Good luck I just read your last post, how did the car run before you rebuilt the carb if it started fine and ran okay then you have to open up the carb and find out what you did wrong.I would start with the float make sure you have it set right.Get a good shop manual.

i have a haynes manual from when i had my 86 cutlass coupe. i know thats not a shop manual. but the car ran great when i drove it home after buying it. but after a few trips around the block that first day it started dumpin wayy tooo much fuel. ripped apart the carb and the floater valve spring broke. the car sat for a year before i bought it. and the last time it was started before i bought it, some punks stole it and drove it like hell. but im sure its sat right in the valve cuz i did a trial and error fit like 4 times. the 2nd gasket i bought says so. theres a place around here i heard was good. chris's carb shop. i thought about takin it there and askin them to show me some pointers.

Yep, agreed... all that ^^^^ us exerience talking, no need to even mention any other carb.
NOTHING like pedal to the metal and the Q-jet's response is like, a split second pause (in which you just KNOW something good is gonna happen) after which, BAMMMM the fuel is just maxxxing out your cylinders and your engine just roars to life, snapping your neck back as your car jumps into gear and enters WARP 9.

Rebuild your Q-jet (just saw your most recent post, so yeah it definitely needs a freshening up) and you're golden. :friday:

very expressive in thought are we? haha its all good. i was never planning on getting rid of the q-jet, just slap somethin else on. see what it would be like. ive always had q-jets on my cars. ive also had a buddy of mine freshen em up for me to. R.I.P Daryl. this carbs for you... hes the one who sold me my 83 mc back in the day. he was a fan of the ugly sister 4 doors too. cept he had a malibu wagon. i still see the jackass he sld it to drivin it. he wont sell it and he hasnt taken care of it. but anyways ya i think i will get the shop manual, read up a bit, and take it down to the lil carb shop and learn a thing or two.
