OK I have 15x8 wheels with 4 1/2 to 5 inch back spacing...
My '87 Monte SS has 15x8 Chevy Rallye wheels (locally we always called them 'Vette rims). Unsure of backspacing, but it is in the 4"- 4 1/2" range. There were P295/50R15 tires on the back when I bought the car. The R/R tire rubs slightly. I am not having any luck locating a P265/ width tire, so I'm going to go with P255/60R15. I am confident that 2 sizes narrower will clear fine. I think a P235 will clear the front OK, but I would go with a 60 instead of a 70 (P235/60R15). This will give it a bit of rake, besides, a P235/ 70R15 is a tall tire.

'78 Cutlass, '86 GN rear, slightly lowered
15" x 8", 3.75" backspace
MT ET Street R bias, 28x11.50-15 tires
hammer roller wheel well lip.
Fits perfect.

Also run Nitto 555r 275/60-15 on a set of Enkei 15x9 wheels with 4" backspace. I run a 1/4" spacer on those and they BARELY clear the frame.
Fronts are unknown width and backspace Enkei 14" wheels with a 205 tire. No issues there other than being WAY too small.

Factory Lug Spacing on all 78-88 A/G Bodies is 5 on 4.75"
Factory wheels are 14x6 and 15x7. 14x6 BS is ???, 15x7 BS is 3.75"
14x6 wheels run a factory tire size of 195-70-14 which is a 24.8" OD tire.
15x7 wheels run a factory tire size of 215-65-15 which is a 26" OD tire.
78-81 use 7/16"x20tpi lug nuts
82-88 use 12mmx1.5mm thread pitch

I currently run a 17x8 with 4" BS.
Tires are 255-45-17 and lowered 3". It only rubs at full lock because of the extra lowering.
I'm trying to lower my car and I was wondering what kind of spring you went with to get that 3in drop. Because I'm going to be running the same size rims as you as well.

Ok . . so I've tried to dig through this thread . . and WOW . . a LOT of info. Overwhelming, actually!

I think I might be safe with what I'm choosing - but if there's anything I should have any concerns about, can somebody please give me a heads up.

I am going to go with the reproduction SSI Oldsmobile rims, in 15x7, on all 4 corners, that they have at various sites (Year One, Specialty Wheel, etc)

Car: 1979 Cutlass Calais
Rims: 15x7, 4-3/8 backspace (or 4-1/4, depending on which site you look at)
Planned tire size: 235/60R15

Stock suspension height (maybe some slight sinking on the body mounts), stocky body, I do not want to roll the fender lip.

Any potential issues before I go ahead and start buying stuff?

Those wheels should fit. However, they will limit your tire width should you choose to go larger than 235. 235s should work though.

I'll respond that I'm running 15X7 with 4.5" backspacing, 235/60/15 in the front with .25" spacer and 15X8 255/60/15 with 4.5" backspacing in rear. no issues with stock ride height. I'd like to lower it 1", but haven't pulled the trigger. This is on a 85 Cutlass.

Not to highjack, but I really like the front air dam on your car, can I ask where you got it?

I was considering the 15x8 with 4-1/2 inchbackspacing, but, based on other posts inthis thread, I got the impression that I might potentially run the risk of rubbing... and I'm looking for no scraping of either tire or rim on anything. I'd rather err on the side of caution.

On the other hand,if the 4-1/2 backspace on the 15x8 rims is also absolutely trouble free, then i'd be likely to go with that.

Front and rear bumpers are fiberglass from Heads-up Composites in Florida. The air dam is integrated into the front bumper which has also been narrowed to install flush without any fillers. https://www.facebook.com/headsupcomposites?fref=ts

That looks cool, Thanks for the link! I saw an 88 with a the same bumper today at Norwalk I thought that it bolted to the bottom of the bumper, didn't realize it was the bumper cover also. I might look at the 80's Chevy trucks to see if that might fit and look decent
