I'm in awe. I have never seen anybody want to replace one before.

x2

If you do take it to a shop to replace the vinyl make sure they are not just laying a new one on top of the old one unless you agree to it. Most places won't tell you about the short cut they take.

To remove the old top they need to remove the rear quarter glass, which is easy but messy. I am sure some shops don't want to bother with. Also you should inspect the car after the old vinyl is removed to see if the body needs any metalwork. A shop like that won't do bodywork and would just put new vinyl right over rust damage.

I think just cause GM was lazy and stuck on an ugly half vinyl roof we should correct that mistake, not repeat it..

Easier said than done

But, nonetheless, I agree.
I have seen ONE professionally done G-body vinyl top that I thought looked fantastic though. Just don't let them put it on over top of the old one.

Most people don't like it, but there are some that do and I appreciate the elegance it brings to the car.

if someone ever uses the term elegant when referring to my car I did something wrong..the G body looks so much slicker without some vinyl on the roof. There is a reason the SS, 442, Hurst Olds, GNX and GN's never got the vinyl treatment

Granted, the vinyl roof was used on most luxury sedans such as cadilacs, etc.. hence I used the term elegance.
The vinyl top is not a typical roof for muscle cars, or cars that were factory produced with high performance (motor/transmission/rear end/etc) such as in the cars you mentioned. There's the "reason".

If someone ever uses the term "slicker" when referring to my car, I did something wrong. Thanks for you opinion though.

I thought thats what the body kits were for to make it slicker to the wind to reduce the drag and make it quiet and stable at great speed. Maybe they are not functional and just tack on for looks I don't know. 454muscle I looked through your pics and didn't see any pics of the centerpiece you know the heart the big block muscle. Please post some pics of that bad arse motor, rear end, suspension, trans, fuel system.

Edit Sorry to the OP I didn't mean to take this thread off track. Please continue with regards to vinyl tops.

I disagree. 'pontiac performance' and the gp front end is a bit too aggressive for it to be wearing a half-top (IMO). I'd suggest you take a long hard look at some of the gp build threads on cars w/o the half top which have been painted before you proceed, although I do commend your efforts to keep the car looking original.
