will I have to convert to electric carb?

For some reason when I fired her up for the first time it was idling at about 6000rpm.
Also did it again and it was backfiring really bad and flame came through the carb, I believe its my timing but I have already tuned it and timed it, will I have to time it again because of the new carb?

No timing is gonna cause a 6000rpm idle. That is dangerous as well, you could surely cause engine damage if it runs at that speed while not under a load. No you will not have to re time the car just by putting the carb on. If you really want to get into it you could based on the mixture of the new carb but that is not something you need to mess with. Put the carb on it and run it. Now you said this carb is used. Has it been monkeyed with? These Edelbrock 500,600cfm carbs are pretty good for a daily driver out of the box. I keep one around and put it on all vehicles that are suspect of having carb problems or engines that need broken in. They rarely go out of tune and rarely need rebuilds. They just aren't big on max Hp but you just want the damn thing to run and me too. I keep coming to your post hoping your gonna say all issues fixed and im laying 50 foot burnouts haha.

6000 rpm at idle? Once you realized there was obviously a problem, I hope you shut it down RIGHT AWAY. If you didn't then shame on you.

I think anything that would cause a 6000 rpm 'idle' should be pretty easy to detect, like an obvious stuck open throttle. If you bought this Edelbrock carb from a friend, are we to assume he knows about cars? If so, maybe he should be giving you a hand with all of this. Was this a KNOWN good carb?

I do have the edelbrock on it and its still backfiring and idling really high.
I never let it run for longer than 1 second as soon as it goes up I shut it down cause I know i could blow my engine, and I cant afford that.
But I don't think its been messed with, because My friend just got it put it on and took it right off, I don't know why but he just wanted something better I guess.
So I am just at a loss for what is going on with it.
But i cannot wait till I am done and can just cruise in my dream car.
I mean I don't think my engine has much HP.
But thanks for the words.

Oh I shut it down with cat like reflex, lol.
But yeah he knows a bit about cars and hes trying to help but is also at a loss.

He said it was a good carb said he drove on it once but took it off.
I guess to get a better one.

I am actually going out to check the throttle, because the pedal is down a little low and wont come all the way up.
So thanks for reminding me, I will go check that out and will come back in to tell everyone if its the problem.

Check the return spring?

Just throwing this out there. Is it possible your throttle cable is too short? With all the linkage hooked up can you with your hand give the engine throttle and then make sure it returns to a closed position. You can also try turning the idle down if it is idling too high. If it is idling at 6k there is a huge problem but really dunno what to tell ya. Are you guessing at that number or did you see it on a tach?

Its actually a tad bit to long.
I think I am just going to buy the throttle bracket.
Because the old one I have will not work.
and is holding the gas down and putting the return spring way to far back.
