and that's where they get you........... you can get the software for damn near free but they want to switch to a subscription based service so they can nab you for renewal fees.
Its like leasing cars. You can get a new car every 3-4 years for the low low price of $199 bi weekly for the rest of your life
I will wait to find out if Win10 is a colossal cluster F@#k! like Window Millennial, Windows Vista, Windows 8. Microsoft is only successful because of the Monopolistic business practices, not because they actual create a good product. Of the last 6 version releases 3 have been flops and the other 3 are just updates tweaks to the same GUI...
I installed the Windows on a new computer that I had put together so there was no leftovers. According to the geniuses at Microsoft I have never used the key for a Windows install in the past. I was told I had to buy a key.
I shelled out extra for Win 7 with a "license" that's supposed to let me move it to another machine in the future. Only one machine at a time, is the only limitation, supposedly. The installation claimed that using the key to register it was optional, but I used it anyway. This had the effect of removing the default desktop background (which had icky colors) and leaving it black (which is icky black).
Seems like you should only need to buy a new key if you already used the original and your "license" (as they like to call the product you bought and paid for) only allows you to use the original key once. I believe they do have install-once versions like that.
Is it possible that the key has an expiration date, and that yours expired without being used?
I guess I'll find out how mine works (or doesn't) when the time comes. But how much you wanna bet that if I bite on the Win 10 upgrade I'll lose the ability to migrate to a new machine?
I didn't like win 10 with all the apps I don't want so i reverted it back to win 7. Now that it is back on win 7 I get the notice the win 7 is not genuine. Funny thing it was genuine when I upgraded to win 10....
So its going down the Windows 8.x route.... Not good. The whole "one way trip" thing is concerning. I'm canceling my plans to do this on my ham radio PC and stick with 7 until I can actually see it in action. Thanks.
I just called Microsoft the see if I can resolve the issues of my pc coming up not genuine after reverting to win 7 but was told "an unusual high volume of calls and wait time will be an hour"...
I had XP for a long while and really liked it. Vista wasn't out long before Win7 came out. When I built my last pc I put Win7 on it and really like it. Didn't have any install issues and it's been running great ever since. My mother has Win8 on hers and as far as I'm concerned it sucks. I'm not going to use another OS until I absolutely have to.
No argument it was a nice simple functional GUI.... Windows though has not and is not an OS (Operating System) it is a GUI (Graphical User Interface). All Microsoft has done since Win 3.x is add more and more layers to the GUI and hide the DOS/NT OS bootstrap
True. Behind Windows 3.1/3.11 was the original DOS, with all kinds of patchwork crap on it. I remember software running in 32-bit mode that kept tripping over the keyboard controller, switching back and forth between "real" and "protected" mode.
