I have the opportunity to pick up a Holley 670 Street avenger W/ electric choke off my dad. He picked up this unknown used carb off FB classifieds and had nothing but issues with it trying to set it up. He refused to pull it apart and rebuild it and just purchased a brand new unit.

It looked like it has been dropped at some point. The choke rod was bent holding the choke completely closed.
It looked like somebody had taken some pliers to where the accelerator pump lever is pressed down and "adjusted" it.

Is it worth the headache of trying to sort this thing out? I need another carb like I need another hole in my head.
It could be a carb kit away from being a great carb for my wifes S10. Or it could be a total PITA.
What do you guys figure.

I’d mess with it, with the understanding you’ll probably be undoing more shade tree tuning. I’m a glutton for punishment in that way though. Holleys are holleys so even if you need parts, they’ll be cheap and easy to find.

I would rebuilt it and set it up to the original factory specs so you have a baseline to start from when you go to tune it.

You say opportunity to pick it up. I'm assuming he wants you to pay him for it, and probably close go whatever he spent.

I'd pass if it wasn't free. You need to buy parts, plus a basic carb kit, then spend who knows how long undoing who knows what with it. From the description of the "adjustments" prior owner(s) made it sounds like it has been "dicked with" to use a clinical term.

Take the money he would want, add to it what parts/kit run (which, yes, holly are cheap, but still it adds up) then add what you value your time at.

I think you could buy a known working carb that you've got a better idea what you're getting for less money/time/hassle.

If it's going on you wifes car just get a new proform and save your self a HUGE headache!!!

The last thing you want is your wife complaining to you about the cars!!

if it's not the car it'll be something else...and at least with a car he'd have a chance at understanding the complaint....

I just put a new Holley Brawler 650 on my Malibu and was VERY impressed with the quality. Made in the USA. Since Holley now owns Quick Fuel and Pro Form it has features that were once unique to all of them. Off the top of my head:
Billet metering blocks
Billet throttle plate
replaceable jetted air bleeds
sight glasses on both sides of both bowls for checking float level
Power valve protection
electric choke
4 corner idle mixture
polished zinc plated main body and bowls.
