hands down keep the salon.....................they made thousands of those cutlass supremes, probably 500 thousand between the broughams and supremes from 81 t0 88. i guarantee you they only made under 2000 salons in any given year, and salons were not offered in all years, and were order only cars unless you bought the showroom display. basically salons are as rare as 442's ..........if not more rare

peace

I knew the car was rare but did not think or know it was that rare, Thank you for that now I know what I have and feel alot better to have it.
But I am going to keep my baby and just fix the exhaust and paint on the 1st.

From a guy that does quite a bit of trading...I WOULD KEEP YOUR CAR much better interior and I would just throw a 350 in there!! You have put too much work into yours!!

Yeah I was thinking the same about just throwing one in there but as I said above I ain't got the money to throw into gas these days at almost 5 bucks haha.

I knew the car was rare but did not think or know it was that rare,

It's not. They made alot more than 2000 Salons per year. You want proof? The 85 442 is technically a Salon. They made 3000 442's in 85. There were obviously plenty of Salons that weren't 442's so that's alot more than just 2000 right there. Salons ARE rarer ( and more desirable too IMO ) than Supremes, but they they're still not considered a 'rare' car.

BTW, keep your Salon. When you get some extra cash, drop in an OLDS 350 or 403.

It's hard to assess just by looking at the pictures. Rarity is not an issue to consider, really they are both in the same category more or less. You don't have the money for a 350 but here you can have one for free -- so it might be a worth while option, but you just want to make sure you don't get screwed, right?

Things to consider:

Why does he want to trade? Is he tired of paying a lot for gas? Or is the engine on the way out, or maybe the frame rails are rotted, or maybe it rattles too much or the windows are too loose or there is no heat and the AC is shot, who knows, but you need to find out the real reason.

Things to do:

Thoroughly inspect his car, open the trunk and look under the carpet and spare tire areas, and inspect the brake and signal light wiring etc. Look under the car, specifically the frame, and especially the rear frame rails, inspect for rust and rot. Look at the interior, lift the carpets up and look at the floor pans, are there any holes/rust?

Drive the car, feel the shocks, handling, steering compared to yours. Check that ALL the accessories, switches work.

Lastly, find out about that 350. It's obviously aftermarket. What's the mileage on it? How is the fuel consumption? How does it start (every time), idle, and rev. Smell any burnt oil? Hear any noises, ticking, etc? How hot does it get?

Get a compression test on the cylinders.

If the car is really comparable to yours and the engine checks out, and IF you won't mind paying extra for gas in exchange for the extra torque (to me, it is well worth it), then I say GO FOR IT! Just be careful, take your time and do those things ^^^ and you're golden.

believe what you want..................i have done the legwork, no matter how you slice it, they made less salons than any other model, that makes it a rare car. had one of my salons for 15 years. live in a city of a million plus, been keepin my eyes out for these cars at least that long. I have seen hundreds af cutlasses, but only 7 salons.
anyways just because you don't believe something does not make it untrue

Well does make sense honestly, He says it has less than 500 miles on it but how much is true I don't know cause I have never seen this in person.
I could try to just at least check it out and he could check mine out in person.
But best believe I am going to inspect it like no other cause I don't want to be put in the same situation with my car that I had that I just got over with.
But thanks for all the info I should check out makes everything a lot easier on me.
I will check it out and I will inform you all on how it was.
