Anyone running a poncho mill with an Rpm intake? I don't have the engine In the car yet to do any measuring and I'd like to know if there's enough hood clearance without using a drop base air cleaner. Carb will be a Q-jet.

Steve,

I haven't used an RPM in my Lemans, but that is what I had on my stroked 400 in my '70 GTO. I had to use a drop base air cleaner on that. I can't imagine that there's more room on the newer cars. Good news is that VFN makes a very nice hood for you that will fix that problem! I'm not as fortunate...

I've been trying to avoid cowl hoods to be honest. I'm really leaning towards keeping the car subtle as possible. I have the original big air cleaner housing from the safari wagon and I was kicking around the idea of using it if I decide to go the sleeper route. I may just paint everything corporate blue and try to pass it off as a 301 with quiet exhaust. It would just break my heart to paint all that nice aluminum though.

Will a stock pontiac 350 or 400 even fit? I would like to swap out the 301 for the larger pontiac engines and keeping a stock air cleaner assembly. I too hate that cowl hood.

Also what is that you have to look out for broken exhaust manifold bolts on the 350 blocks?

I put my 455 Pontiac in my 84 GP way before it became a popular idea, 1991 to be exact. I have the Edelbrock Performer manifold and Edelbrock carb though, not sure of the difference between the RPM. You do need a drop base air cleaner and need to use 301 engine mounts as they are shallower than the 400-455 ones. Move the mounts around the frame until 3 out of the 4 bolt holes line up, at least that's what I had to do. When I first dropped the motor in I had the mounts too far forward which raised the motor up a bit, then years later when I had to change the motor mounts I found a spot further back in the frame which dropped the motor down and further back on the frame where it should have been. But I never had a hood clearance problem, very close for the passengers valve cover to hitting the A/C housing, use the lower profile valve covers. Also very tight near the HEI to the firewall, but it does fit very nicely!

Any Pontiac V8 will fit our cars, that's what's so nice about Pontiac! The blocks are the same outer size just different inside. The exhaust manifold bolts can be a b*tch, I have one broken on mine it snapped off in the head but I just doubled up on the metal gasket and it hasn't leaked since going on 14 years!

Well that's good to know. , I read before about using the 301 mounts because of the height of the other pontiac engines. But I still have my doubts that an inch off the engine mounts will make the other engines fit. If I rid the 301 and the metric th200 for a pontiac 350 mated to a th350, this would be a basic swap? And could I keep the A/C set up?

I've swapped out a few metric 200's for TH350's and it's a piece of cake. I've been told before that the 301 accessory brackets will fit 350/400/455's as well. The 301 mount brackets and motor mounts for a g-body are what you want for a swap. The earlier Pontiac mount brackets are taller....such as ones from an older b-body.

You are missing the fact that all Pontiac blocks are the same height/width except the 301 which is a little shorter in height. there are no big blocks vs. small blocks with Pontiac, they have the same outer dimensions so yes a Pontiac 301-350-389-400-455 will all fit. The only reason you need to use 301 mounts is because they are shallower and you need them in order to fit these v8's into a Gbody, not because the other engines are taller. I put a 455 in my gbody already so why do you have doubt that any other Pontiac motor wouldn't fit>>>??

I don't have doubts, other than my expertise level is low. That and everyone I talk to including mechanics always try to steer me towards Sbc 350, something I don't want to do.
