The car I was thinking of the most was a 1999 or so Toyota Corolla VE. An interior that is as monochrome as anything I have ever seen with not even a black accent piece to break up the gray. Reliable, but not fast, etc. An amazingly unremarkable car in every respect. Same goes for the Geo/Chevy Prism of the same time frame. At least a Geo Metro is remarkable for it's fuel economy, the 82 Malibu for the pure misery of driving it, and the Tracker is kind of unique as it can be had in 4 wheel drive and has a good break over angle because of it's short wheelbase. The Hondas can be fun to drive if you get the right one ( Sorry, but I like Civics with the right parts) and are remarkable for their reliability. The Corolla is the car you could imagine a Communist government designing for it's people as the "Universal Transportation Pod". It's sort of a modern day Lada Riva, not fun, not pretty, not interesting, but it will get you somewhere with absolutely no style or joy whatsoever. I use the Lada because there have been other "People's Cars" which were quirky and odd yet endearing for that reason. The VW Type one (KDF Wagen), Mini, Citroen 2CV, Hindustan Ambassador, and even the Saschrang Trebant 605 all had at least some sort of character-even if bad- that made them have a following. No one will miss the 99 Corolla when they are no longer on the road. Someone will miss the others. The only other cars of recent memory which were so devoid of character that come to mind are the Yugo, Hyundai Elantra, Century/Celeberty/6000STE/Cutlass Ciera quadruplets and the Ford Contour/Mercury Mystique. Okay, throw the Taurus, Sable, Lumina and some Mopars so bad I don't remember them on there along with the Camry. Yet any of them is more exciting than a 99 Corolla. Because, even a Yugo GV has more character than a Corolla.
