So, when you went to BBC (which has another connotation), it dropped 2 seconds and you were magically in the 9s, right?
This swap happen in 07 with a 477 went to Super Chevy event at the track only made 1 time trial passes then it ate the starter was so mad packed it up so really havent went back cause meet my wife bought a house and we had our daughter so I put a street motor in it and years ago but this summer going down the track it's been to long plus I never got to tune in this motor to see what it can do. But the 477on paper should of went 10.50s and it was set up for spray and should of went 10.0 or better.

Olds are tougher to go fast but there is now more parts than ever including an aftermarket block. The Olds 350 was way more reliable in the 70's than brand C, you know the blue smoking puffing, cam flattener.
Good to know there's more parts out there and a block I know I guy in the neighborhood I grew up in he bought diesel 350 blocks cause they were thicker he said I never looked into it since I was going bbo

It's funny that a 477 BBC now a days is almost considered a small block.

The aftermarket block is Rocket Racing's BBO that will go to 600 cubic inches, is big bore possible(4.4"), stronger everywhere and even can be made in compacted graphite iron. There is the diesel and Nascar block for the SBO, the Nascar block which some are also siamese bore. Sorry I should have been specific. Cutlassefi runs an Olds 350 in his personal car with modern sequential EFI, I believe he went from Accel, which no longer has support, to the new AEM infinity. Either way he has made the SBO a contender again. His stroker cranks are lighter than 330 forged cranks and way stronger. There are just way more 455 failures, no doubt the big bearings and heavy parts play a big part.

so olds engines are more stronger? is that why they made the diesel out of olds blocks instead of chevy? i need to clean more grease off my engine to find the casting no. up front i got it cleaned up to the oil fill but i think there are more numbers there the guy was told it was a 350 but it was originally a 307 so maybe it was a blend of parts.

Yes, Oldsmobile is better than Chevy!:mrgreen:

Oh, now there’s a good way to start an argument. Lol

Hey, is that lumping it with women and wedding rings? It costs more so it must be better?

High maintenance women ($$$);can range from the spoiled daddy's little girl to the stuck up blue bloods... I'll let Olds/Buick/Pontiac fight their pecking order out themselves :p

Then you've got chevy, who (most of the time) are comparatively low maintenance women. ($)

Of course, as a generality (and yes there are exceptions) those high maintenance girls come with certain... benefits/desirable attributes. In the motors, it's a torque advantag among other things. On the girls.... nah, I don't need to list them. It's a family forum anyways.

That is the casting number you're looking for- on the flat beside the oil fill. Also, the large, single digit number at the bottom left corner of the head above the exhaust port (#1 & #8 cyl's) will tell you what heads you have.
Olds motors aren't necessarily stronger unless you build a diesel block, but I'd put a steel crank 350 Olds against a Chevy any day. The rumor about the high nickel content is just a myth as far as I'm concerned.
My "Olds Superiority" comments are just a razz against the norm (Chevy). I fall squarely into the "Dare to be Different" category, in case you hadn't noticed.
My primary point is: if you have, indeed, an Olds 350, there is the foundation for a decent rebuild without changing motor mounts and transmission for the sake of putting in a Chevrolet. Now, if you have a 307, that puts you on the hunt for a 350 or 403. If you can't find one in your neck of the woods, it might be better to join the flock of sheep.
If you want to keep it Olds, there are 3-5 of us here to help. Cheers!:friday:

Not so much.

It's complicated, and a really long story, but, actually you had a bunch of those windowed web blocks that were in some ways inferior in the olds.

The different sub brands at gm invested their r&d money differently, that's all there is to why olds had the diesel, then chevy later had diesels...

Are you high? Other than the nylon cam gear, the Olds 350 ran forever with basic maintenance. They didn't eat valve guides and cams like brand c from that era. Even the later windowed blocks were very durable if not pushed hard.
