Guess this may be more of a venting post, but wanted to share my experience. Seven years ago when this project was started, there weren't many options, and 8.5's were hard to come by. I bought one off a member on a different forum, who told me about all the upgrades it had, and I decided to buy it for $1800 (remember hard to find, plus upgrades). Fast forward to now. I found out last Thursday that the ring and pinion were out of tolerance and the axle's were twisted. Today I finished ordering all the parts and now the cost of this rear is $2800 + labor. I guess what I'm getting at is be careful when buying used stuff. I could have had a nice new setup for that money.

I think he meant he’s got a total of 2800 in it. I think that’s what he meant.

Then the business case is: cut your losses.

Unload the 8.5" and buy new.

My friends call me crazy, but I buy new stuff if I can't get a SMOKING deal on used.
Especially transmissions/rear ends. My new Mosier 9" w/disks & posi was less than $2500.
Not trying to rub salt in your wound, I have learned this lesson too many times myself.
Trust no one selling "premium used parts" unless the price allows for a rebuild.

Have you used this rear end for 7 years or has it been waiting?

Well, as they usually say, if it sounds too good to be true....
It's always buyer beware. Especially if you don't particularly know the person you're dealing with.
The lesson here is, be careful who you trust...or think you trust and what he claims.

It was sitting on a stand for 7 years. Oddly enough when I started this project of engine, transmission, rear end swap, I quit because it seemed that everything I did to this car was going wrong. & years later and it still is, but this time I have someone else doing the work. No problem about the salt Haha, there are more options then there were 7 years ago. If I started this today, I'd buy new.

The ring and pinion were at .020 when it should be between .006 - .010

In the end , I just hope that at least one person will see post and decide to go new instead of used and help them to avoid my mistake.

then the backlash was off on the ring and pinion which is easy to adjust so all you needed was a couple of axles so how did the price jump to $2800??

The real business case would be that the original investment took place 7 years ago. One could justify buying new at this point but that money can be considered sunk cost for the age. Would have to expend 2300 and then have 2 rears with 4100 total investment. Can’t really write any of it off so even if you could sell the old one you wouldn’t get probably more than 5 or 600 for it in poor shape. Let’s be generous and say you got 1000 for it. You’re still down 3100.

At 2800 to get the issues fixed, you would still be 300 to the food assuming you could’ve got 1k for the broke one.

If you need a rear end, and you’re gonna have to eat some $$, my business case would be spend the 1k and it likely will be a lot less painful. Plus use the 300 phantom savings to get a new TC or shift kit for the trans.
