I can't get 14 degrees of timing on top of my 14ish pounds of boost on 91 octane fuel, It knocks hard. I have two bent gen3 rods and a broken piston for my feeble attempts. 8-10 degrees is all I dare with the swill we get passed off as fuel around here.

I know....

I am not exactly sure what I was thinking, in hindsight of course.

You were looking for some practice at removal, repair and reinstall - the 3 R's of boost lol.

At least you're not trying to tune the computer by reading the plugs!
I deserve that... lol

A Motor, AKA ol' flexy: 2005 LQ4, Gen 4 rods, 823 heads from L96. Refreshed bearings and rings. fancy studs and such unnecessary things.
B Motor, AKA Next Victim: 2005 LQ4, 317 heads. 150k mile survivor, possible low oil pressure take out.

So this has Gen3 rods? Down here it's uncommon to find an '05 with Gen 4 rods - not impossible, but rare.

"A" motor was Gen 4. B should be Gen 4, 2004.5 was the start of the Gen 4 stuff.

Might be a Canuckistan thing, But From the motors I have had apart its been very consistant.

Did it have gen 4 rods or 3.5? Press fit wrist pin powedered metal rods (3.5) or slip in powdered metal (gen 4)

I have run 14 degrees and 10 psi with ~e65 on my toothpick rodded '99 lq4 and it hasn't blown up yet :O

You probably did bend the rod. I guess I haven't seen much rod bending occur with 'low' power. Usually you pinch piston rings if that's the case? Generally what I have seen, rods only bend at high boost levels and timing is more piston damage related. However I don't have any first hand experience and am just saying this as a keyboard cruiser.

It has slip fit pins.

I spent a couple hours last night doing research and I am certain that for the peak torque RPM area I was probably 5 degrees hot for timing. At 5700-6500 I probably would have been fine with 14 degrees at 10psi on pump gas. My mid range looked like an E85 timing ramp, top end wasnt so bad. Not sure what I was thinking.....
