Advice for an OD trans for a 455

Isn't the 442 carb 800 cfm? I know less have trouble with getting the 442's CCC set up than Vin Y carbs, not doubt due to the richer calibration. That is awesome mileage by the way. Drag radials aired down and posi set up tight is a good start, regular tires would be plain useless with 500 ft/lbs.

If you go 200-4R the names you should go for are ck performance , extreme automatic or turbo buick performance.

I visited Dave Husek at turbo buick performance and he is a wealth of knowledge. I have also had conversations with Chris from ckperformance and will build you a transmission you need not try to over sell unless you just want all the billet parts.

The forward drum is the weakest link in this transmission. The torque converter should be matched to your engine combo.

The 4l80E is an expensive option but can handle alot of power in stock form. If you want to save money on the electronics for it transgo makes a full manual conversion for the 4L80E. You will need the driveshaft modified and crossmember .

Like v8 rumble said, 4l80e is a good trans that can handle a lot stock. My dad just put one in his nova with a Circle D converter and loves it. It is an expensive swap though in terms of buying a computer and converter.

Yep 99-up 4L80E's have the 7 bolt pattern, so the std Chevy 6 bolt plus the 12 o-clock position used on the newer LS engines.

1991-1998 have the std pattern

Definitely do the swap, you wont be disappointed. I have a Pontiac 455 in my GP and had a TH400 for years and then I swapped my rear end to a GN 3.42 posi with rear disc conversion and quickly realized that I could not drive it on the highway without it screaming and taching out way too much. I drove it that way for 2 summers then I found a GN 200-4R with the CZF code and I love it. I am using the stock GN D5 converter and wired up the lockup so when I go over 45 mph it automatically locks up the converter to the crank shaft and it becomes 1:1 ratio which dramatically drops the RPM which also raises your MPG and now I can cruise on the highway to the beach 75mph at around 2200-2500 rpm. It was by far the best upgrade that i have installed in my car!
