What did you do to your non-G Body project today [2024 edition]

Since I made the last full custom RC Cutlass that ended up a shelf/case queen, decided to build another as a replica of my actual Cutlass that I can drive around.. Spent about 5 hours cutting out the body today and getting it ready for paint. I got my paint already, but want to shoot it on a nice warm day...hopefully get the white down soon.

Well, since I am in the process of once again recuperating from an episode of abdominal muscle spasms , not too much. Not going to belabor the situation, it is chronic and the fix would likely involve lots of surgery, a high risk for infection, and most likely me ending up dead on the table. And I like me just where I am Thank You.

I did manage to have a new MAF sensor for the S-10 dropped off at the house and was able to do the swap out/swap in between it and the old one with reasonable ease, even though it was out on the street and it is now icicle days and crushed ice nights around here. Only complication was that the one sensor coupler assembly that attaches it to the air cleaner top could not be obtained from anywhere around here. It is now made of Obsoletium and for that reason now falls under the heading of Unobtanium,

The light at the end of that tunnel was lit by E-BAy who actually had a couple of vendors who were offering the coupler under its original GM part number. So one is now on its way to me. Only glitch to all that is that the vendor uses the E-Bay international shipping system which is times cubed way slower than any of the other couriers or USPS. Evidently having to use their shipping services is part of the whole "sell with E-Bay experience". In this situation it might just turn out to be a good thing as the Canadian National Postal Service, Canada Post for short. is in the midst of a 72 hour notice of strike action which means no mail gets delivered unless/until they negotiate a new one or the government shoves one down their throats. My guess is the legislated return and get whatever is decided on.

Apart from the MAF I also elected to replace the gas cap as it is apparently part of the Evap system and if the vent doesn't function that can cause check engine lights to go off. Weird. For itself the old cap did not shake rattle or make noises indicating that the vent valve was still operational. unlike its new replacement and the sealer O-ring for the threads was toast.

In connection with that system I had already scored an Evap control module and finally managed to have Napa locate a new Evap canister. Everything in the evap system is OEM and came with the unit when it was assembled. It is is in the same shape as was the MAF unit then it is on the cusp of committing mechanical suicide and ready to be put out of its misery. I know that the older evap units like the one in my Monte can be rehabbed; someone posted the exact how to they used for that exercise but cutting the case apart and then trying to find fresh charcoal to use as the filter medium would likely be a waste of time as the charcoal might be the hard part to locate. Maybe a pet store that carries large aquariums or similar but still work.

iirc, the charcoal resolution has been posted over on the ECC forum. you may want to take a look over there.

Last week changed the spark plugs on my daily cadillax xts with supposedly authentic ac delco gm replacements from amazon.. but i got dupped! Less than a week and complete failure.all 6 missing electrode.. looks like they are chinese knock ofs..cant beleive car even ran today.

Which just about defines the lack of quality in products with "Chinesium" as a major component in their manufracture.

Ah, 86Blk, thanks for the reference and link over to the EEC panel. Basic plan for now is to go new and then use the old tank as a guinea pig for a rehab attempt. Although I would like to get that evap can swapped in, asap, none of this is going to be winter work unless absolutely necessary. Plastic is brittle enough as it is and winter only exacerbates that issue.

Covered the face of the weels with copper coat anti-sleaze after swapping the wheels. They were stuck in there really good.

Now to beat the crap out of it next week hunting.

Symptoms? It made a weird sound, Uncle shut it down, and it locked up and wouldn't restart. Plus it had a hole in the side of the block they said. Well oil pan, close enough. So I started taking it apart topside, moved down under, and when I got to the torque converter bolts there weren't any! OK, there were 2. Whoever rebuilt the trans didn't torque the bolts, 4 snapped off and got beat to death between the flexplate and the block/oil pan and ended up busting the corner off of the pan. Well F me, we're this close to yanking the engine, the replacement is lower mileage, all cleaned up with new parts, so we'll press and he can sell the LQ4 for a bit more than the core charge. Maybe to me, I've long wanted one to stick the 2.8L Kenne Bell onto.

Yesterday sucked, wasted a lot of time pretending to be a machinist. But all exhaust fasteners ended up being functional and now we just need a pair of heat shields for the manifolds as the old ones were rotten. Got the engine bolted back in last night and after work today went out and got it running. Has a cylinder 5 and 8 misfire. We swapped plugs (new) around, wires, coils, and the problem stayed put. Tried a compression check and a good cylinder came in lower than #5 so at this point we're leaning toward injectors. Dumped 2 cans of Seafoam in the tank and going to run it for now. You couldn't feel the misfire, but you could see the check engine light flashing. We narrowed it down with live data off a $350 scanner that seems pretty capable for the money. It sounds like I just won an LQ4 though so that's awesome. So long as we get these misfires licked.
