What did you do to your G-Body today 2024

Went out in the garage after dinner and took the plastic sheet off the ‘80 and went for a ride. 3 hours later and a stop at the DQ a few towns over for ice cream and it’s back in the garage. Running really well, the torque converter lock up worked fine on the highway and I’m getting 65 mph at 2200rpm. Still getting acquainted with the car, hoping the weather remains good through the weekend so I can get it out again for some more miles. Still haven’t opened the secondaries but may give it a go if the opportunity presents itself next time out. Running rock steady at 180 degrees and 45 psi oil pressure at cruising speed, acceptable on both counts.

What rear gears are coupled with the 700R4?

Wouldn't think that you would see any smoke if the leak was to the outside. So my vote goes to a slowly dying freeze plug in the block. There would be no sign while driving and once parked and in heat soak, any seep or weep would become steam due to the heat in the surrounding metal and dissipate. Unless you had the hood up and actually babysat the cool down, I doubt that any evidence would show itself.

And my out-of-left-field thought here is that you have a head bolt that is threaded into the water jacket and you have coolant travelling up the threads and escaping that way. Not sure if your engine has any of its head bolt bosses open into the water jacket but know of other designs/makes/models where the builder has had to coat the bolt threads with Permatex thread sealer or similar because the threaded hole into which the bolt was to be run had been drilled through at the factory instead of being blind.

Nothing to report of any real substance but..... I wired the Torque Converter Lock Up for the TH700R4 this past weekend and have not tested it yet, weather has turned ugly for the coming days. Hope to road test this coming weekend. I also made an appointment for Jan 2 for the OEM pin striping at a local sign shop. Very nice husband and wife operation and the wife will be hand painting the pin stripes on the '80. Hoping the weather stays clear and relatively salt free for the ride to and from the shop. Drop on Thursday morning and pick up Friday noon time.
not throwing any shade here-was just wondering why you opted for the 700 vs the usual 200 that gets installed in these cars.

I put that transmission in the car back in 1989 (?) it was out of an ‘87 Iroc Camaro. I tore up the tired TH350 that was in the car originally. Back then the 700 was still a fairly new platform and I wanted the O/D for the planned 3:73 gears. That was a compromise because my friends were pushing me for 4:10’s. The TH200R4 wasn’t ever mentioned amongst the guys I was hanging around with back then. My car has been, until recently, off the road since 1991. For a mild build like my 350 Olds the 700 has been no trouble.

Had the headers coated.just waiting on the motor now. 20241213_063330.jpg

Covered the rest of the grey primer in my trunk. Back in black!

I also finished modifying a Stealth manifold and an adapter so I can bolt a Rochester to them without having nothing but turbulence.
